Kanz ends Walski’s streak, Cummins gets a second win at Dodge County Speedway

KASSON, Minn. -- After an all-day rain drenched the Dodge County Fairgrounds on Saturday, it turned out to be a beautiful night for racing on Sunday. Close to 70 race teams signed in to do battle at the Dodge County Speedway.

The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods had a three-wide scuffle for the lead right from the start with Greg Mattick, Erik Kanz and Billy Steinberg. Mattick took the point, but Kanz wheeled around the outside to steal the lead. Shaun Walski was up to third very quick while he was trying to keep his five-race win streak alive.

After a quick yellow, things heated up. While Kanz led, Walski made a bid for second on Mattick and on lap 8, Walski’s car erupted in smoke and his night was done. Kanz continued to fend off Mattick but Kylie Kath entered the picture late in the race.

Kath took second and on lap 10 and then challenged Kanz the rest of the way. Kath took the lead and then Kanz got it back. Kanz held off the determined Kath for the win and Mattick finished third. Jason Schlangen and Chad Vaith rounded out the top five.

The USRA RHS Modified feature was a dandy race right from the start. Todd Scharkey, Jason Cummins and Steve Wetzstein raced in tight quarters. Wetzstein blew by Scharkey for the lead on lap 4 and pulled away just a bit.

Cummins got to second and slowly reeled in Wetzstein. By lap 10 Cummins was right on Wetzstein, and on lap 11 Cummins had the lead. Then it was Cummins’ turn up front, but Wetzstein was by no means out of it. Brandon Davis got to third on lap 14 and Josh Angst battled Jay Ihrke for fourth.

On lap 20 the leaders worked lapped traffic and Wetzstein threw a perfect ‘slide job’ on Cummins in turn 1 and got the lead. Cummins turned his car to the bottom of the track in turn 2 and drove back by Wetzstein to regain the lead.

Cummins led the final 5 laps to win his second of the season and become the first two-time winner in the division. Wetzstein was a close second with Davis in third. Angst got the fourth spot with Ihrke fifth.

Next Sunday, July 3, is $5 admission for Owatonna residents with their i.d. Racing is at 5 p.m. with draw cut off at 4:30. Go to www.dodgecountyspeedway.com for more info and check them out on Facebook also.
