Walski stays perfect at Kasson; Wetzstein wins too

KASSON, Minn. -- Despite the two inches of rain that fell on Saturday night, the Dodge County Speedway’s race program took place on Sunday night. The track crew did a super job and got things ready to roll on what turned out to be a beautiful night.

Some “secret” race fans kicked in an extra $400 to the USRA RHS Modified feature winner to make it $1,000 to win. Another kicked in an extra $100 for second and also an extra $100 to fourth in the feature.

The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod feature had a tough time getting started. After a couple of yellows before the first lap was complete things settled down. Shaun Walski took the lead but Erik Kanz challenged and stole the lead to complete lap 1. Troy Hovey followed to second while Kylie Kath cracked the top five.

Hovey swept to the inside of Kanz on lap 5 and put some pressure on the leader. Another yellow on lap 9 bunched everyone back up. The race broke down again with another caution right on the heels of the previous yellow.

When the race resumed, Walski came alive and passed Hovey for second on lap 11. One final caution slowed the race and set up an exciting restart. Kanz drifted high in turn 2 on lap 12 and that was all Walski needed to steal the lead.

Walski led the last six laps to win his fifth in a row and remain undefeated in feature events. Kanz was second with Kath third while Hovey was fourth. Brandon Hare finished out the top five.

The USRA RHS Modified feature took three tries to get things going. Jason Grimes bolted by polesitter Nate Wasmund to hit the lead. Steve Wetzstein blasted to the cushion and away he went to the lead on lap 3. The action was intense but the caution flag showed its ugly head too many times.

When the fifth yellow flag was displayed, five laps were cut off the feature distance. Wetzstein again bolted to the top side of the track while Josh Angst now entered the picture. Then it was Tim Donlinger’s turn to make a run at Wetzstein. Neither driver was able to get by because Wetzstein was on his game on this night.

Wetzstein drove away to pick up the $1,000 check and become the fourth different winner this season. Donlinger finished second while Brandon Davis charged from twelfth to third. Jason Cummins drove from seventeenth to fourth and Angst was fifth.

Next Sunday, June 26, Claremont residents will receive admission for $5 when they show their identification. Also a reminder to everyone that the new start time is now 5 p.m. For more information on the speedway visit them at www.dodgecountyspeedway.com.
