Cummins nails a grand at Dodge County Speedway

KASSON, Minn. -- Rain showers early on Sunday did not dampen the Dodge County Speedway’s activities this Sunday. The sun even made an appearance when the feature events rolled on to the speedway. It was Dodge Center night as residents of that town received a special admission price this week.

The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods had Scott Demmer and Greg Mattick on row one when the green flag flew for their feature. Mattick took the lead, but Demmer and Shaun Walski were right on his tail. Walski blew by Demmer on lap two and went after Mattick for the lead.

Walski took over on lap three and checked out from there. The race behind him was good as Kylie Kath came up and too over second on lap five. Then Erik Kanz, Demmer and Mattick went three wide for third and Kanz took the position. Kanz then spun on lap 10 to bring out the yellow.

Walski pulled away on the restart and remains undefeated at Kasson with his fourth win in a row. Kath finished second while Jake Timm had a late race charge to third. Mattick finished in fourth and Kanz rebounded back to fifth.

The USRA RHS Modifieds had an extra $400 put up by a secret race fan to make the winners share a cool $1,000. Joel Alberts and Jason Cummins started the 16-car field up for the 25-lap feature. The first start ended when Jake Timm collided with Tommy Myer in turn one and that ended both of their nights.

Cummins got the jump off the outside of row one and took the lead while Alberts gave chase. Tim Donlinger, Bobby Swanson and Todd Scharkey drove three wide for fifth. Brandon Davis challenged Alberts for second while Donlinger raced with Steve Wetsztein for fourth.

Davis got past Alberts for third on lap three and then Donlinger took third on lap five. Cummins had blasted way out front by this time and was long gone. Davis’ run ended on lap 14 when he slowed and that brought out the yellow flag.

None of the drivers had anything for Cummins on this night when the leader walked away for the remainder of the race to pocket the cool grand for the win. Donlinger finished second with Alberts third. Bob Timm had a good late race run to fourth and Josh Mattick had a fine finish in fifth.

Next week the start time moves to 5 p.m. at the Dodge County Speedway. Draw cut-off will now be 4:30. The first 100 fathers will receive a special gift in celebration of Father’s Day next Sunday, June 19.
