Carney tops USRA Western Flyer HotMods at El Paso Speedway Park

EL PASO, Texas -- It was a crazy night to say the least at the El Paso Speedway Park.

Heat race wins went to Austin Adams and Pat Carney in the USRA Western Flyer HotMods, with Carney picking the dash win.

The drivers took the green for their 15-lap main event with Michael Gonzales taking the early advantage from the front row. On the move early on, Carney worked into the top five, bringing Sherman Barnett along as the caution waved with 11 laps to run.

On the restart, Gonzales distanced himself from Carney who built momentum to the back bumper of Gonzales. Claiming the lead with eight laps to run, Carney was challenged to the inside line by Gonzales but would hold off the charge.

With four laps to run, Gonzales forced the caution with a spin in turns 3-4, collecting Barnett in the process by cutting a tire on his machine.

To the restart, Carney went unchallenged as the battle for fourth kept the field on its toes with Duane Murphy, Javier Zapien Jr. and Adams in a good battle.

In the end, Carney won with Madrid, Alex Gonzales, Murphy and Zapien rounding out the top five.

Up next at the El Paso Speedway Park, the USRA RHS Modifieds will make their return on Friday, June 17, along with the UMP Late Models, Street Stocks, Legends and the Hornets.

Racing on June 17 is scheduled to get underway at 7:45 p.m. with gates to the grandstands opening at 5:30.

The El Paso Speedway Park is located 6.5 miles east of Loop 375 on Montana Ave. Take the left at KRAG, then take the first paved right.
