Alberts secures first USRA RHS Modified win at Dodge County Speedway
KASSON, Minn. -- Finally it was a beautiful night for stock car racing at the historic Dodge County Speedway. Several new names graced victory lane and a couple of those were career firsts.
Stevenson Insurance of Kasson handed out extra money to the feature winners this week including a $300 bonus to the USRA RHS Modified feature winner.
The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod main was next for a 10-lap run. When Erik Kanz was sent pit side with a leaking fuel cell, only five cars answered the bell. It was once again the Shaun Walski show when he made it three in a row with Kylie Kath a distant second.
The USRA Modifieds had a $300 bonus on the line from Stevenson Insurance. Joel Alberts and defending track champion Josh Angst led the field to the green for the 25-lap main event. Alberts and Angst cycled around the speedway side-by-side for the first couple of circuits.
Tim Donlinger and Brandon Davis were door-to-door for third with Ben Mattick close behind. Angst got a little high that allowed Alberts to take off. Donlinger along with Mattick slipped past Angst and set after Alberts. Mattick then got past Donlinger for second and was right on Alberts.
The top four ran in tight formation around the speedway while the fans stood and cheered them on. Donlinger slipped past Mattick to reclaim the second spot as they were still close to Alberts. Donlinger then got to the inside of Alberts, but Alberts beat him to turn three and held on. Tony Vaith stalled in turn four on lap 15 and the caution flag flew.
Alberts took off on the restart, but behind him Mattick clipped Donlinger and sent him spinning. Vaith was also collected in the incident that sent Mattick to the tail. Donlinger got his spot back with some wrinkled bodywork.
Alberts drove away gain on the restart while Donlinger tried to keep up. Alberts had a few car length lead when Brandon Davis’ steering broke and he stalled on the frontstretch. That set up a green-white-checkered dash to the finish.
Alberts took off and secured his first career USRA RHS Modified feature win, much to the delight of the crowd. Donlinger finished second while Steve Wetzstein’s late-race charge ended in third. Bobby Swanson and Doug Hillson finished out the top five.
