Davis, Walski top big fields on opening night at Dodge County Speedway

KASSON, Minn. -- The 2011 race season got kicked off at the Dodge County Speedway on Sunday evening. New promoters Stan and Sandy Gilbertson took over the reigns of the historic fairgrounds speedway this spring and Mother Nature finally allowed the first show to take place.

A great field of 93 race cars filled the pits, which were a challenge due to the rain on Saturday. That coupled with a monster truck show the day prior in the rain made things an extreme challenge to get things ready to go.

The USRA RHS Modified feature was a barnburner for most of the 25 laps. Bob Timm and Jacob Dahle led the 22-car pack for the start. Ben Mattick stalled on lap 1 so the race was restarted.

Timm led the pack while Brandon Davis quickly took over second. Timm had his hands full with Davis when they dueled for the lead. Davis used the top side to draw even with Timm on lap 11 and 12. Then the lead duo still went side-by-side as they worked lapped traffic.

Timm gained an advantage for a couple of laps, but Davis reeled him back in and by lap 19 was right on Timm’s trail. This time Davis used the low groove and got the lead in turn one on lap 20. Timm tried the low groove in an attempt to get back around, but to no avail.

Davis finished first for his second career USRA RHS Modified win. Timm was second while Jacob Dahle had a great run in third. Bobby Swanson drove home fourth and Jason Cummins finished out the top five.

Unfortunately, the yellow flag was out more than the green flag in the 20-lap USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod feature. Erik Kanz led the 23-car field until Shaun Walski grabbed it away on lap eight.

Troy Hovey challenged Kanz for second and on lap 10, Kanz jumped the berm in turn one and went off the track causing a caution. The race then had two more yellows and five laps were cut. Then when the time limit for the race loomed, it went green, white, checkered also.

Walski held on for the win while Hovey finished second. Defending USRA National and Track champion Brandon Hare was third. Jason Schlangen finished in the fourth spot while Jared Boumeester was fifth.

Racing continues next Sunday, May 22, with the program starting at 6 p.m. Also it is $5 admission when you present your Kasson identification.
