EL PASO, Texas -- Another night of packed grandstands at the El Paso Speedway Park, and to the green and Duane Murphy led the field to speed as the USRA Western Flyer HotMods kicked off the night’s main events. Working on lap number 2, the battle for fourth went three wide before the caution waved for Sam Alonzo.

Back to green with 19 laps to go and Rob Madrid made quick work of Murphy, taking over the race lead with Austin Adams and Patrick Carney also on the move. Up to second, Adams ran down Madrid as Carney worked into third.

Starting to reel in Adams, Carney took over second as Adams slowed to the pits with just over 10 laps to run with Carney also suffering mechanical failure with 10 to go.

Now up to second, Sherman Barnett had to work on holding off Christy Georges. Into slower traffic, Madrid stretched his lead by over a straight-away before the red flag waved. Into turn one, the lapped car of Jeff Emly turned right in front of Georges, destroying her car claiming Barnett and the lapped car of Jerry Slawson in the process. Luckily all drivers walked away, but the attrition rate saw a field of eighteen cars reduced to only six with Barnett somehow able to return to racing action in the runner-up spot.

But as the race resumed with only five laps to run, there was no catching Madrid as he took his first win of the 2011 season. Barnett took second with Ralph Adams Jr., Paddy Rush and Alonzo rounded out the top-5.

Up next, the USRA RHS Modifieds return to the El Paso Speedway Park on Friday, May 20. It will be a special night at “The Park” as we look to raise supplies to send to the tornado-ravaged regions of Alabama. Bring a case of water, toiletry items or other non-perishable food items to the front gate next Friday and you will get in for half price.
