Carney holds off Georges in El Paso Speedway Park season opener

EL PASO, Texas -- The west Texas wind may have been blowing, but it didn’t stop the fans as the stands filled to near capacity for the 2011 season opener at the El Paso Speedway Park.

With no point average to determine main event lineups, the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod field was lined up straight up off of heat race finishes putting Patrick Carney on the pole for the night’s 25-lap "A" Main.

From the start, Carney led with Christy Geroges in tow after starting inside the second row. In third, Donovan Flores kept pace with Carney and Georges before the caution waved with 20 laps to run. To the restart and the caution was immediately displayed as Sherman Barnett spun his Thrifty Nickel 82, collecting Alex Gonzales.

After a brief splash of water on the high side of the track to bring down the dust the field got back underway with Georges stalking Carney for the race lead before the caution waved again for the spun machine of Duane Murphy.

To yet another restart and this time things got ugly as Gonzales spun on the exit of turn 2, collecting Kenny Medina, Blaze, Duane Murphy and ultimately sending the car of Hector Prigone flipping with several other cars making contract but rolling away.

With no injuries, the track was cleared but the field was decimated from 21 cars to only eight remaining, dropping the laps from 19 to only 10 to go with Carney going unchallenged to the checkered flag.

Geroges grabbed second with Flores, Austin Adams and Barnett rounding out the top five.

Up next at the El Paso Speedway Park, the USRA RHS Modifieds will open their season on May 6, along with the UMP Late Models, Sisbarro Super Trucks, Legends Cars and Hornets.

Racing is scheduled to get underway at 7:45 p.m. with gates to the grandstands opening at 5:30. Admission is only $10 with children ages 11-15, military personnel, seniors, law enforcement and university students with i.d. getting in for $7. Children 10 and under get in to the grandstands for free.
