Martin masters traffic for WOW win at Scotland County Speedway

MEMPHIS, Mo. (July 5, 2001) - Tonight would be stop number nine for the Winged Outlaw Warriors, as 24 sprinters would invade the fairgrounds of Scotland County. Series Point Leader, Randy Combs, would be trying to extend his points lead tonight but not in his familiar red number 1C. Combs would be piloting the 75 sprinter tonight; a car previously piloted by Jesse Hockett and David Lawver. The action would start early tonight as Mark Knapp would make contact with the retaining fence on the back stretch put his car on it's side, sidelining him for the evening.

HEAT 1: 1. 14 Randy Martin (2), 2. 78 John Schultz (6), 3. 126 Stacey Alexander (3), 4. 3L Brian Brown (7), 5. 9G Charlie Gilpin (1), 6. 44 Phil Heavelow (5), 7. 75 Randy Combs (4), 8. 16 Mark Knapp DNS

Martin would take the lead from the start, Schultz would move up to challenge until a yellow came out for Combs who cut down a rear tire. On the restart Martin would pull away for the heat win. Gilpin would claim the fifth and final transfer spot.

HEAT 2: 1. 19 Tracy Nichols (1), 2. 5 Steve Dean (2), 3. 3P Rusty Potter (7), 4. 5J Larry Ball Jr. (6), 5. 85 Tommy Mikels (5), 6. 2 Lowe Cannel (8), 7. 12D Mark Detrick (3), 8. 17 George Schell (3)

Nichols would run away with this one. Potter would be fast and move up to the 3rd position from his 7th starting spot but would be unable to get around Dean.

HEAT 3: 1. 14C Mike Trent (2), 2. 2D Mitchell Moore (3), 3. 77 Jesse Hockett (6), 4. 9 Jeff Nehring (4), 5. 99 Jimmie Davies (7), 6. 32 David Langford (1), 7. 33 Tim McVay (5), 8. 6 Alexander (8)

Trent would run off and hide in this one, the race was for second. Moore and Hockett would put on a great show, both running different lines, with Moore taking the advantage.

The top 5 would transfer to the A with Combs leading the way.

Martin would take the lead from the pole position. Martin would continue to increase the margin between himself and Trent until lap 7 as they started encountering lap traffic. Trent and Schultz would close the gap between themselves and Martin. As they entered the heavy lap traffic Martin still had the advantage but Trent had closed the gap to a fell car lengths. Martin would skillfully maneuver his way through the traffic to establish a comfortable lead once again and take the feature win. Brown, Hockett, and Ball Jr. would all make a charge to the front but the hard charger of the evening would be Series Points Leader Randy Combs. Combs transferred from the B and started in the 16th spot and would pick up 7 positions to finish 9th. Friday night the WOW will be at Callaway Raceways in Fulton, MO.
