B.J. Dahl won the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock main event.

It was another great night at Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, on Friday night as three familiar faces parked it in Victory Lane, as well as one driver who got the first win of his career.

That driver was the pilot of the No. 52 USRA Hobby Stock, B.J. Dahl of Calmar. Dahl started on the pole and held off a last lap bid from Steve Larson (Decorah) to capture the first victory of his career. Larson made the most of a late race caution that made for a green-white-checkered finish.

Paul Seabrooke of Decorah finished third, while Justin Hanson of Hawkeye was fourth. Hanson ran in the runner-up spot for the majority of the race until the caution flag on lap 18 of 20. In fifth was Decorah’s Josh Ludeking.

While Larson couldn’t quite pull off the win on the final lap, fellow Decorah driver Dan Hovden did in the USRA B-Mod division. The driver of the 16D Rage Chassis spent the majority of the race working his way toward the front after starting 12th on the field. He avoided an early wreck and only sustained minimal damage as he pulled off a turn-four pass on Protivin’s Ben Moudry on the last circuit.

Moudry, who led the first 19 and ¾ laps finished second, while Walker’s Alex Zwanginger also moved up 11 spots in the feature to take third. New Hampton’s Jeremy Schaufenbuel was fourth, while Decorah’s Ryan Thorsten ran one of the best finishes of his young career to finish fifth.

In the USRA Stock Car main event, Mitch Hovden (Decorah) jumped ahead seven spots to win his fourth straight race at the speedway. The win made it a clean sweep for the Hovden brothers.

In the runner-up spot was Decorah’s Kevin Donlan, while Jake Lampert of Caledonia, Minnesota, continued his strong 2021 campaign to take third. In fourth was Calmar’s Lynn Panos, and Waukon’s Troy Hansmeier rounded out the top five.

In the USRA Tuner division, it was La Crosse, Wisconsin, driver Jeremiah Anderson that took the checkered flag - but after post-race tech for the top five finishers, he was disqualified for refusing to let officials tech his car. Inheriting the win was Lawler’s Mitch Balik who went “tic-tac-toe, three-in-a-row” for another win.

Balik moved up seven spots in the feature to finish ahead of Elkader’s Josh Hills in second. Like his brother, David Balik (Fort Atkinson) also charged up seven spots in the 10-lap race to take third, while Clermont’s Steve Lane was fourth. Katie Stahl of Castalia rounded out the top five, finishing one spot ahead of husband and current track points leader, Brad Stahl in sixth.

Next week, the USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, and USRA Hobby Stocks will be back in action at Fayette County Speedway as they will race alongside the SLMR Super Late Models.
