Mather, Fisher, McDaniel, Greiner, Kirkland take Bloomfield honors

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa - For the fourth week, race fans were treated to some awesome and close racing action sponsored by Crop Services of Drakesville. All five weekly classes took to the always fast 3/8-mile Bloomfield Speedway for Fast Track Friday action.

In the first feature of the night were the USRA Modifieds with Colt Mather of Webster leading every lap for his second win of the 2009 season. The battle for second between Scott Dickey and Dennis Elliott and Porter Collins made for some two- and three-wide racing with Dickey powering his Larry Shaw Chassis to the second spot but just couldn’t catch Mather. Elliott was running third untill Brandon Banks of Washington made it a two-car battle with Elliott on the high side and back on the low side this battle came down to the final turn with Banks making the pass for third and Elliott taking fourth.

In the Kirkland Auto USRA Hobby Stock feature, the drivers got the opportunity to get an extra $50 bonus if the could stop Derek Kirkland of Centerville, who has won three straight. The bounty money was put up by the Tom Lathrop, a racer and owner of the new Ottumwa semi-pro football team called the Bridge City Knights. The front row was Don Nunnikhoven and Nathan Wood who raced side by side for the first seven laps before Kikrland, who started 10th, made it a three-car battle. The caution would fly on lap 11 for a car sitting in turn 3. Under the caution, Wood’s machine was showing sparks off the left front and the tech inspector checked the car and found it was a bent A-frame and was able to continue. On the restart with three laps remaining you had to know it was going to get exciting and the final three laps was three- and four-wide with Wood leading. But Kirkland, Nunnikhoven and Dustin Griffiths all wanted the lead with Griffiths making the pass off of turn 2 and held off the challenges off of the final turn to take the win. Kirkland crossed the line in second with Nunnikhoven in third and Wood in fourth. After the feature Tony Teninty of Eldon claimed the winning motor of Griffiths and Griffiths refused to sell, leading to a disqualification and Kirkland being awarded the extra $50 as he keeps the streak alive with four in a row.

The Taylor Automotive USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars saw Kyle Harwood of Oskaloosa and Matt Griener of Washington battle for the lead with Greiner taking his second win of 2009 at the track with Harwood in second followed by Nathan Wood in third and fourth going to Chris Hawkins of Drakesville, who was later disqualified for an illegal carburetor. This moved Terry Rachels of Knoxville up to the fourth spot.

The final feature of the night was the Pepsi-Cola USRA Karl Chevrolet B-Mods with Mike Shelton of Bloomfield and Andrew Schroeder of Keswick battling for the lead with Schroeder taking the lead and Shelton running second and Rocky Fosdyck in fourth. Last week's winner Jason McDaniel raced his way from the 10th spot to battle with Shelton for the second spot. The caution flag flew, setting up a six-lap shootout with Schroeder trying to hold of Shelton and McDaniel. On the restart, McDaniel took the bottom with Shelton on the top side and Schroeder taking the middle and McDaniel made the pass off turn 2 with Scroeder holding on to the second spot and Shelton taking the third spot. The battle for fourth saw Carter VanDenBerg of Oskaloosa and Mystic driver Jim Walker battle for the fourth spot on the final lap with Walker taking fourth and VanDenBerg in fourth.

Next week’s action will feature all foure American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series classes, plus the Hornets and a special appearance by the Mid-America 305 Sprint Cars returning for the second time. The action will heat up with hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing action to follow at 7:30.
