Late pass sends Jackson to USRA B-Mod win at Lucas Oil Speedway

Kris Jackson's fifth USRA B-Mod feature win of the year Saturday at the Lucas Oil Speedway was hard-earned as he overcame a sub-par heat race that left him starting 13th in the feature.

But Jackson, of Lebanon, quickly worked his way through the field and battled past leader Andy Bryant with four laps remaining. He cruised from there to prevail by 1.6 seconds.

Bryant, of Fort Scott, Kansas, started on the pole and beat outside front row starter Dillon McCowan to the lead as those two ran 1-2 though eight laps.

Meanwhile, 2020 track champion Jackson worked his way from 13th all the way up to third by lap eight.

Jackson got around McCowan two laps later and was one second behind Bryant when a lap-16 caution bunched the leaders for a restart with nine to go.

After working the inside line as Bryant rode the high groove. Jackson finally took the lead completing lap 21 after Bryant went slightly above the cushion in turn four.

"Andy is one of the top-notch competitors around the top of a race track," Jackson said. "I knew, as hard as he was running, if I could show him my nose enough that maybe I could push him over the (cushion's) edge. I didn't really know, but I was trying.

"Man, 14th to first in a field like that, is pretty neat. That's good for (Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series) national points."

J.C. Newell finished third with J.C. Morton fourth and Ryan Gillmore fifth.

Saturday's Ron Jenkins Memorial presented by Rugged Radios celebrated the life of the track's creator who, along with his widow, Mary Jenkins, built the original Wheatland Raceway.

Forrest and Charlotte Lucas purchased the Wheatland Raceway in late 2004. Upon the completion of the racing season, the Lucas Oil construction crew under the careful supervision of manager Gary Hubert set about to transform Wheatland Raceway into what is now known today as the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks."

Lucas Oil Speedway underwent a massive multi-million dollar renovation project that lasted until mid-summer 2006.

As part of the project, the only item remaining was the dirt track itself. An all-new grandstand complex, complete with 21 luxury VIP suites, state-of-the-art bar, concession stand and gift shop were erected. A completely new pit area was installed with concrete pit stalls plus electric and water in nearly every pit stall. An enclosed tech building, fabrication shop and a full-service parts store were also constructed.
