Record-tying 61st career win for Davis at Deer Creek

Brandon Davis won the USRA Modified main event.

Brandon Davis won the USRA Modified main event.

For the second week in a row hot and humid conditions were in place at Deer Creek Speedway. Two new winners highlighted the racing action and for the second time this season three of the five winners were Brandons. Young Truck Line of Lyle along with Randy & Sandy Norby sponsored this week’s program.

Extra money was up for grabs in the USRA B-Mods this week. Sandy Norby added an extra $800 to the top five with an extra $250 for the winner and also a $100 hard charger bonus. Ray Winkels also donated and extra $100 to the winner of the feature.

Trevor Fecht took command of the main event when he took advantage of his pole position start. Kadden Kath and Eric Thill trailed but the race heated up quickly. Kath stole the lead on lap two and Thill followed along to second. Thill then set after Kath and they had a great race going for the lead.

Noah Grinstead moved into the top five and challenged Jayden Larson for fourth on lap eight. Brandon Maitland cruised from eighth and entered the top five on lap nine. Back up front Thill used the low groove to glide past Kath for the lead on lap 10. Jim Chisholm started 16th and closed in on the top five.

Russell Quinnell slowed to bring out the yellow on lap 11 to erase Thill’s lead and set up an exciting restart. Thill led, but Maitland flew to second while Chisholm darted to fourth. Maitland got low on Thill and assumed the lead on lap 14 while Chisholm was up to third.

Maitland scored the win and with the bonus money took home $750. It was also his first win at Deer Creek and became the 469th different feature winner in the track’s history. Chisholm slipped past Thill for second while Thill ended up third. Kath finished in fourth and Grisntead was fifth. Brody Shaw took the $100 hard charger bonus when he advanced 13-poistions.

Brandon Maitland won the USRA B-Mod main event.

The USRA Modified feature was another Deer Creek classic. J.T. Wasmund and Tony Schill led the 19-car field to the green flag for their 25-lap race. Wasmund took the lead trailed by Schill, Josh Angst and Dustin Sorensen. Sorensen raced Angst for third, but a three car pile-up triggered a yellow flag.

Sorensen really came alive on the start and moved to second. He then went after Wasmund for the lead and got it in turn two of the fourth lap. Wasmund fired right back at Sorensen and got the lead back on lap five. Ryan Wetzstein was in the top five and challenged Schill for third.

Brandon Davis started ninth and entered the top five and then passed Wetzstein for fourth on lap seven. Davis then closed in on Schill on lap nine. Back up front Sorensen applied heavy pressure on Wasmund for the lead. Sorensen tried the low groove, but Wasmund had the momentum up top.

Davis got by Schill for third on lap 12 and quickly reeled in the lead duo. Sorensen continued to stalk Wasmund and Davis made it a three car party up front. On lap 15, Davis went low with Sorensen in the middle and Wasmund up top to go three wide for the lead.

Davis took the lead on lap 16 but a yellow flag came out on lap 18 when Jacob Stark slowed on the frontstretch. Davis and Sorensen renewed the battle for the lead on the restart. Sorensen threw a slide job at Davis and took the lead in turn two. However Sorensen’s momentum carried him too far and he brushed the wall. Davis dove to the inside to regain the lead.

The yellow flew on lap 15 when Wasmund slowed on the track to end his night. On the start, Davis led but now Sorensen had his hands full with Jason Cummins who had roared to life after he started in row six. Sorensen and Cummins diced for the spot and Cummins took over on lap 21.

Davis led the final laps for his second win of the year. It was also his 61st career win at the speedway which now ties him for the all-time lead with Jeff Brauer. Cummins finished second with Sorensen in third. Joel Alberts had a stellar run from 12th to fourth and Angst finished in fifth.
