Boumeester wins big in Rapid Speedway USRA B-Mod special

Jared Boumeester won the USRA B-Mod main event.

Jared Boumeester won the USRA B-Mod main event.

Jared Boumeester made the approximately 3-hour drive to Rapid Speedway from Waseca, Minn., Friday night to take aim at the big payout for the USRA B-Mod special.

The feature started with a three-wide battle into turn 1 with Boumeester, Dave Kennedy and Jackson Mulder. Mulder eventually emerged as the leader and set the pace.

After multiple cautions Mulder began to slip away from the field, leading by two car-lengths. On the next restart Boumeester took his shot. The No. 81 dove to the inside of turn 3 and slid up the hill but could not quite get there. The next lap he tried again but the slider was not successful.

Boumeester chose the bottom line on lap 7 and pulled even with Mulder as they raced down the back-stretch. At the line it was Mulder by inches but this time Boumeester stuck to the bottom in turn 1 and made the pass coming out of turn 2. Heading into turn 3 it was Mulder’s turn at the slide job but as he slid up the hill while Boumeester dipped underneath and drove back to the lead.

Tyler Johnson joined the mix and made his way to battle for the second position. Mulder slipped off the top of turn 4 and Johnson claimed the spot. While the two battled each other Boumeester was able to get away and pick up the $600 payday.

“Once we got going it was a lot of fun racing," said Boumeester in victory lane. “The track is a lot faster than it was last year.”

Johnson came home in second while Derek Van Veldhuizen charged from 12th to third ahead of Dave Kennedy and Tyler Tesch.

Johnson, Boumeester and Kennedy were the heat winners.

Presented by Sybesma Graphics, the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks saw 22 drivers take to the raceway for the main event. On the start, Eric Gaul of Luverne, Minn., grabbed the lead with some great tight racing going on behind him including a four-car battle for the fourth position.

There wasn’t enough room as Marty Halouska and Alex Wiertzma got together coming out of turn 2. Both cars slid off the back-stretch with Halouska’s machine bouncing into the air and coming down in the deep ravine behind the track, bringing a red flag over the track.

On the restart, Gaul assumed the lead with Tracy Halouska and Dustin Gulbrandson following with Gaul and Halouska working the high side while Gulbrandson tried to burn a line into the bottom of the track.

It took until lap 10, but Gulbrandson finally got the run he needed and made his move. The No. 6 car dove to the bottom  in turn 3, overtaking second and pulled side-by-side with Gaul as they got to the flagstand. Gulbrandson grabbed the lead away in the first turn but a caution come out to negate the pass.

Gaul fell victim to the mental chess match as he went low in turn 1 to attempt the block after the reastart. Gulbrandson seized the opportunity, flying around the high side and taking the lead out of turn 2 and driving away for his fifth win of the season.

“I saw him go low and I hammered the top," said Gulbrandson. "I was just hoping not to slide off the back-stretch.”

Gaul settled for second followed by Tracy Halouska. Doug Brinkhouse came home in fourth and Dylan Fitzpatrick drove from 15th to fifth.

The three heat races were won by Gulbrandson, Halouska and Nick Brady.

Fast and furious were the American Racer USRA Stock Cars presented by Precision Auto Body on Friday night. Current points leader Colten Arends owned the pole and looked to win his second feature in a row after last Saturday. He jumped out to the early lead but Jon DeBoer was hot on his tail.

Just a few laps into the race, DeBoer showed his power as he drove to the outside of Arends to take the lead and brought the No. 5L of Dustin Larson with him. The three were all over each other as they raced around the track. Heading down the back-stretch it was three-wide for the lead.

At that time, Larson shot to the inside with DeBoer up to and Arends in the middle. Coming out of turn 4, Larson had the lead and started to pull away. Behind the top three, multiple cars were shuffling positions trading spots throughout the field while Larson kept extending his lead.

A few cautions kept the field close, but it was Larson driving to his fourth win of the season.

“Look what happens when the car doesn’t break,” exclaimed Larson as he climbed out of the car, noting his bad luck as of late.

Arends held on to finish second ahead of hard-charging Scott Overgaard coming from 15th. DeBoer and Chad Lonneman rounded out the top 5.

Larson, Arends and Justin Regnerus were the heat winners.

The Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series returns next Friday, July 24, during the Lyon County Fair with Fan Appreciation Night featuring free grandstand admission for all fans.
