Elliott in seventh heaven at I-35 Speedway

Dennis Elliott won the USRA Modified feature.

The threat of rain and cooler temperatures set the scene at the I-35 Speedway for Rick Beebe Heating & Air Conditioning Night on Saturday. Prior to the feature events, the track hosted a kids' dash for cash with over $650 and prizes for the young fans.

To say that the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods are a competitive field would be a huge miscarriage of justice. In the previous week’s feature, 15 laps elapsed in just under seven minutes in a green-to-checkered feature with battles all around the high banks. This night thrilled the fans again.

Chase Galvan and Shadren Turner began on the front row. Galvan kept his car on the apron with Turner on the high side cushion. By lap 2, Turner shot to the lead with Galvan into second and Blake Pierce a close third. With Lonnie Hibner making his way into second and closing in on the leader, Turner adjusted his line to the bottom, desperately trying to keep Hibner behind him.

The pair continued to race side by side with Turner again up on the high side and Hibner down low. Pierce was not to be denied, and after the second of two yellow-flag restarts, Turner led as Pierce and Hibner raced side by side as the final laps ticked off the scoreboard.

On the final lap, Turner kept the top spot to earn his sixth feature win of the year. Just behind, Hibner edged out Pierce for second by mere inches while Galvan finished fourth and Daniel Harris took fifth.

When you think American Racer USRA Stock Cars at the I-35 Speedway, last year’s track champion Jeff Dixon comes to mind. Dixon is once again leading in the points as the year heads into the final two months. He commanded the lead early Saturday, driving away from the rest of the field and seemingly into another zip code while Gene Stigall settled into second.

With just five laps remaining, Dixon drove over the turn 3 banking and came to a sudden stop, ending his quest for the victory. Stigall inherited the lead for the restart with William Dahl second and David Davis third. Stigall and Dahl broke away from the pack and traded the lead for three laps. On the final lap, Dahl went inside of Stigall heading into turn 3. The two made contact with Stigall slowing as Dahl raced by for his first feature win of the year. Officials, however, penalized Dahl for the the contact, awarding Stigall his first feature win of the year. Dahl was credited with seond with Davis third.

The USRA Modifieds were the final event of the evening and arguably the most exciting as well. Last year’s track champion, Dennis Elliott, and last week's winner, Lee Hibner, lined up for the feature on the front row with Hibner on the pole. Hibner led early but Elliott raced into the lead on lap 4. Elliott kept everyone behind him, earning his seventh win of the year while Darren Shaw finished second and Tyler Hibner was third.

Next Saturday, Sept. 7, fans get free admission to the grandstands. as the I-35 Speedway hosts Pro-Ag Mike Knight Celebration Night for the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series. E-Mods, Pure Stocks, Sport Compacts, Midwest Limited Late Models and MIdwest Outlaw Vintage Racers are also on the card.
