Luinenburg wins three-wide thriller at Nobles County Speedway

“They’ll be talking about this one for a while,” was the popular sentiment after Saturday’s Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock feature at Nobles County Speedway.

Local racer and polesitter Ernie Dailey led early while Nick Schilling took several stabs at the lead. Dailey gave way to both Schilling and Justin Luinenburg after pushing up turn two. Luinenburg quickly grabbed the point until a caution mid-way through the 15-lap feature bunched the field.

Luinenburg was penalized for jumping the restart and sent to the rear. Dan Strandberg had moved up from his sixth starting position to challenge for the lead. Luinenburg quickly passed four cars to move up to fifth after the restart while Strandberg battled with Schilling at the front. A lap later, Luinenburg rode the cushion to third.

With just a couple of laps remaining, Luinenburg and Strandberg joined Schilling to go three-wide for the lead. They would run that way over the final two laps, each taking turns inching out in front with Strandberg on the bottom, Schilling in the middle and Luinenburg on the cushion.

It was anybody’s race as the tree came through the final two corners but Luinenburg had the most momentum coming out of turn four to chalk up one of the most exciting wins in recent memory at Nobles County Speedway. Schilling was impressive in running between the last two track champions and placing second ahead of Strandberg.

The stage was set for more excitement in the American Racer USRA Stock Car division. Darrin Korthals and Luke Sathoff entered the night tied atop the standings at 386 points. Korthals led the majority of the 18-lap feature after starting on the pole. Sathoff had to work his way up from sixth to challenge the leader.

Sathoff ran high through three and four while Korthals raced the bottom ring. Sathoff used a restart to power past Korthals’s No. 11k ride en route to his third win of the season and sole possession of the points lead. Roger Verdoorn led the rest of the pack to finish third.

Kole Nordquist got by some good cars, including Cole Denner (seventh in USRA national points) to take the checkered flag in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature. Unfortunately, a post-race disqualification in tech took the win and the trophy and placed them in the hands of Denner.

It was the first trip to Nobles County Speedway in 2019 for the New Hampton, Iowa, racer. Justin Voeltz and Derek Van Veldhuizen were scored second and third, respectively.

The disqualification caused Nordquist to fall from first to fifth in the point standings. Josh Bonstetter now leads the division by five points over Nick Peters.

Jason Bolte’s first trip to Nobles County Speedway was a success. Bolte started on the pole and led all 10 laps of the USRA Tuner feature.

Bubba Brown of Jackson took second. He performed his legendary cart wheels in victory lane as a tribute to Bolte’s big weekend.
