Johnny Scott won the USRA Modified main event.

Even though is was their third official race at the Vado Speedway Park on Saturday, each American Racer USRA Stock Car race is different from the last.

The main event saw Mark Smith pilot his car to the front and seemed to flawlessly hit every mark in a fast and confident manner. Garry Kerr Jr. followed behind and battled with Jason Josselyn and Brian Bennett for the follow-up spots.

Kerr took second, Josselyn finished third, Bennett was fourth and El Paso’s Ted Cain rounded out the top 5.

Johnny Scott made his way to Vado Speedway Park in commanding fashion Saturday. Despite his recent retirement from dirt track modified racing, he hasn’t lost a thing, including the inaugural USRA Modified race at the new facility in Vado, N.M.

Vado Speedway Park has been described several different ways since it’s opening night, and Saturday’s racing did not disappoint.

Thirty-five USRA Modifieds checked in for their inaugural race and heat #1 belonged to Bumper Jones. Philip Houston won the second heat race, Jake Gallardo took heat #3, up-and-coming hot shoe Carlos Ahumada Jr. won the fourth heat and heat #5 belonged to Dustin Smith.

"B" feature action saw some unusual players trying to race their way into the main event. The top 8 that moved on were Christy Barnett, Royal Jones, Jessie Hayne, Terry Tipton and Gregory Gorham.

The "A" feature hit the track and fans were on their feet as the traditional four-wide salute came together perfectly. Gallardo and Smith started the 30-lap race on the front row. Johnny Scott quickly moved to the front from his third starting position and was out and running. He took the lead and never looked back.

Racing resumes next Saturday, June 29, for more Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action featuring American Racer USRA Stock Cars and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods plus 305 Winged Sprint Cars and Late Models. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:45. General admission is $12, seniors and military are $10, youth (6-11) are $5 and kids 5 & under are free. Pit passes are $35.
