McCowan fends off Knudtson, Jackson for first win

Current Lebanon Midway Speedway points leader Dillion McCowan of Urbana took advantage of his front row starting spot and fended back repeated charges from Tyler Knudtson and defending Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series National Champion Kris Jackson in taking his first-ever Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature win Friday night.

Despite late afternoon heavy rain storms that moved through the area, track crews were able to get the surface race-ready and produced a quick, smooth surface.

McCowan and Knudtson brought the field to the green flag with McCowan jumping to the top spot with Knudtson right in his tire tracks and Donnie Jackson following closely as Kris Jackson was was weaving his way from the ninth starting position.

McCowan, who entered the night with a narrow points lead over Kris Jackson, was keeping right in the middle of the surface as Knudtson was keeping within a two-car-length difference up front as the race for third was tight between Donnie Jackson, Dayton Newell and Kris Jackson.

A lap-9 caution bunched the field together as McCowan took the pack to green as Knudtson pulled to the leaders quarter panel as Kris Jackson took over the third spot and closed on Knudtson. During the green flag run, McCowan started to put some distance on the field as Knudtson and Kris Jackson were running hard for the runner-up spot with some clean, fast-paced action.

McCowan, in his second season of b-Mod action, is only a third-season driver and is driving the car that took Jackson to his national title last season.

"Kris has helped everyone locally in this class out with advice and helping to get the competition level high," McCowan said. "We use a Jim Ruble motor, and with the health issues Jim has been fighting we are glad to add another driver win to his long list. This motor was just placed in the car last week."

Knudtson, ranked third in the track standings, was happy with his runner-up spot after the team had a rough couple of weeks with some issues and looked to be back on track.

Following the lead trio to the line were Newell and Donnie Jackson.

Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods continues next Friday, June 28, with racing at 8 p.m.

The Lebanon Midway Speedway is located 6 miles east of Lebanon on Highway 32, then right on B Highway.
