Chad Lonneman won the American Racer USRA Stock Car feature on Friday, June 14, at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

A beautiful summer evening for Heritage Days weekend in Rock Rapids, Iowa, brought a lot of fans and a lot of race cars to Rapid Speedway as 97 total cars checked in for competition.

The Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks saw their fair share of thrills and spills throughout the feature. Dylan Vanden Top got out to the early lead, but on lap 4 last week’s feature winner, Todd Uhl, took the top spot away... but not for long. After taking the lead at the flagstand, Uhl slid off of turn 3 on the next lap and went for a wild up-and-over ride to end his night.

Vanden Top assumed the lead and on the restart while the No. X of Tyler Schlombohm went for a roll in turn 2.

Finally back to racing, fans saw two- and three-wide racing throughout the field. Dustin Gulbrandson used the bottom of the racetrack to get by Vanden Top at the halfway point and go on for his first win this year at Rapid Speedway.

“We built a new car this year and it’s taken a few weeks to figure it out," said Gulbrandson. "But it’s rolling now.”

Dawson DeBoer came home in second followed by Blake Arends, Brady Klaassen came out of the "B" feature to take fourth and Levi Vander Weide finished fifth.

Uhl, DeBoer, Vander Weide and Bryant Klaassen won the heats.

Derek Van Veldhuzien led every lap of the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod main event but failed post-race tech which handed the victory over to Tyler Tesch of Lennox, S.D.

Mitch Van Engen was credited with second ahead of Tyler Johnson, Dave Kennedy and Dudley Schroeder Jr.

The heat races belonged to Van Veldhuzien, Van Engen and Lyndon Johnson.

After a lap-1 rollover from Josh Kelderman, the fun began in the American Racer USRA Stock Car class as you could throw a blanket over the top 6 cars for much of the race. Jeremie Gibbs had the early lead with two-, three- and even four-wide racing going on behind him.

After a caution on lap 4, Darrin Korthals jumped from fourth to battle for the lead on the restart. On lap 6 Korthals took the race lead, but then surrendered it one lap later to Adrian, Minn.’s Chad Lonneman, who has multiple hobby stock wins at the track. Lonneman held on through continued battles and late restarts to hold on for his first-ever win in a Stock Car.

“On those last restarts I was just hoping the race was over,” said Lonneman, who came from the ninth starting position to earn his first win over Korthals, Rich Gregoir, Roger Verdoorn and Eric Gaul.

Verdoorn, Korthals and Colten Arends were the heat winners.
