Jackson tops Tony Roper Memorial

Defending Out-Pace USRA B-Mod National Champion Kris Jackson of Lebanon looked to be in championship form Sunday night in the Tony Roper Memorial before a large crowd at the Lebanon Midway Speedway.

After three qualifying heats, the top 10 in passing points locked in. After a last chance event to fill out the starting grid, Jackson found himself on the pole but surrounded by fellow champions in Tyler Brown (2017 track champion) to his outside with the second row occupied by Sam Petty (2018 track champion) and Ryan Gillmore (2017 Out-Pace USRA B-Mod National Champion).

As the green flew, Jackson shot to the opening spot with Petty, Brown, Gillmore and Dylan Hoover close behind along with Dillion McCowan as another former national champ, J.C. Morton, was picking his way forward. After a couple of cautions, it was on lap 5 when Gillmore shot around Petty and started to close ground on Jackson. Following a couple of cautions later, Gillmore was finding the low side to his liking but the track had a light rain shower early in the morning which produced a different type of surface to the field. Gillmore ended up in a chain reaction jam-up in turn 2 and ended up spinning around, causing a caution and restarting at the rear of the field.

Morton had moved up to third and began putting pressure on Petty as Jackson opened up the sizable lead leaving the action to second place. With one final caution on lap 13, the field bunched up single file as Jackson fired strong and quickly placed some distance between the battle for second place as Morton was working the top side hard, then going bottom side to pull off the last-lap pass for the runner-up finish while Petty, McCowan and Gillmore rounded out the top five.

Jackson earned $500 for his feature win.

"Jack (Johnson) and his crew really worked hard with all the rain Lebanon had this week and including Sunday late morning, then the sun came out and skies turned blue to make it a beautiful evening," Jackson said. "The track was fast and normally Midway is slick and smooth and we had a strong field of cars here tonight."

J.C. Morton's last-lap pass earned him the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award and $100 cash after advancing six spots.
