Dalton completes weekend sweep at Springfield

Springfield Raceway's 2018 Out-Pace USRA B-Mod track champion Jackie Dalton of Carthage should bought a lottery ticket this weekend as the hard charger used the top-8 qualifier redraw both nights to his advantage and swept both the Friday and Saturday night Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action presented by Reliable Chevrolet.

On Friday, high point driver Taylor Moore drew the No. 4 chip while Dalton, who was second, kept his spot and then had to hold back the young area charger in the closing 10 laps in a nail-biter. Polesitter James Thompson set the opening quick pace as the pack was showing the outstanding track prep and work as it was two- and three-wide all night on the quick quarter-mile clay oval.

Dalton was able to finally get the top spot from Thompson as Moore was showing a lot of patience and picking his spots. Just barely past halway of the 20-lap feature, Moore started putting the pressure on Dalton as the pair had the crowd excited while Aaron Scroggins and Thompson along with Rex Merritt, Ricky Watkins, Matt Rose and young Dillion McCowan were going back and forth.

Up front, Moore mounted a charge just as the yellow flew for Watkins and Merritt as Watkins went to the pits and Merritt restarted at the rear. In the closing five laps, Moore tried Dalton high and then low several times as Dalton held back the youngster's charge. Scroggins was able to nip Thompson for third with Thompson and McCowan completing the top 5.

In Saturday night action, Dalton was eighth in overall qualifying points and every driver ahead of him left him with the number No. 1 chip as a stout field of drivers including Arkansas speedster Brian Williams, Mark Wolfe and Kansas City racer Kameron Grindstaff were in the pits.

Dalton shot to the opening lead and pulled ahead by a half-straight-away when a couple of cautions bunched up the field. Williams, who started the night sixth on the grid, was showing the crowd just how high an Out-Pace USRA B-Mod could ride on the high banks as Grindstaff, who was involved in an early caution, was slicing through the 22-car field.

A late caution for Wolfe, who was running in the top 5 and coming quickly, slowed on the front-stretch bunched the pack together while early front-runner Jace Parmley was starting to go backwards after a strong qualifying effort. The caution gave Williams a last shot at Dalton, but Dalton got a strong start to keep Williams at bay.

Following the top two were Grindstaff, Merritt and Parmley.
