Gulbrandson takes dramatic Mahoney Memorial win

Dustin Gulbrandson won the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock main event.

Dustin Gulbrandson won the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock main event.

Family, friends and fans gathered Saturday at Nobles County Speedway to honor former racer Jerry “Mahoney” Gronewald. They witnessed a Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock finish that would’ve left “Mahoney” beaming.

The top three finishers in each heat redrew for their starting position in the A-Main. Malik Sampson drew pole. When Corey Gronewald—Jerry’s son—drew the second starting position the crowd erupted. Sampson used the pole to his advantage and went right to the front. He stayed there until the final dash down the front-stretch.

Backing up, Austin Jahnz, Dustin Gulbrandson, Justin Luinenburg and Tom Kracht moved up to take shots at the lead. The challengers all got by Gronewald who was later placed at the rear after bringing out a caution flag.

Eventually, Gulbrandson outbattled the rest of the field to put himself in position to take down Sampson over the last few laps. As they came out of the final turn, Gulbrandson used the inside to gun his car past Sampson for a win that brought the crowd to their feet. The win paid $1,058 with an additional $100 added by Steve Bents Trucking.

Jahnz, Luinenburg and Kracht rounded out the top five. All 25 cars started the feature. Tonia Stevens came from the back to a ninth-place finish.

Jerry Gronewald raced into his 60s. He earned his last track title at Nobles County Speedway in 2010. He retired two years later. He died in December.

Dylan Fitzpatrick had fans in awe as he tricycled his way through the corners once the Holley USRA Stock Car feature went green. As is usually the case, the feature had its share of lead changes. Roger Verdoorn and Jon DeBoer took turns up front until Luke Sathoff worked through traffic.

Once getting by DeBoer, Sathoff cruised to his second NCS win of the week. Like Gulbrandson, Sathoff took checkers on Thursday in a support role of the United States Modified Touring Series.

Ron Prins also snuck past DeBoer to finish second in an impressive run—his first start of 2018.

Luke Sathoff won the Holley USRA Stock Car feature.

Justin Luinenburg just keeps posting great laps whether it’s in his Hobby Stock or his B-Mod. The Reading, Minn., driver chalked up the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod win.

Dave Kennedy made it close at the finish, but a Gulbrandson-like win wasn’t in the works.

Devon Schlumbohm managed third. The point standings are in reverse order of the finish among the top three with Schlumbohm on top—19 points ahead of Kennedy and 48 points ahead of Luinenburg.

Justin Luinenburg won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature.

The USRA Tuners raced the final feature in the rain. Nate Coopman outlasted Scott Espey for his third straight win.

Nobles County Speedway has a scheduled mid-season break next week. The next races are Saturday, July 14, presented by Pizza Ranch. For more information log onto www.noblescountyspeedway.com or see the NCS Facbook page.
