Gallardo, Turner, Gorham top Last Lap at The Park

EL PASO, Texas—Friday, Sept. 2, marked the final time that dirt will ever fly at El Paso Speedway Park, and the memories made on this night will last a lifetime. Almost every class that has ever run at 'The Park' ran tonight for the final time, and the car count did not disappoint with over 180 cars ready to run for more than 2,000 fans in the stands. It was set to be a long one.

The Holley USRA Stock Cars were rowdy to the bitter end. Jaime Torres resumed his position in the lead after just two laps complete but Lloyd Turner was already on the move and charging hard. Torres was using every inch of track that he could to stay out front but nothing would work because Turner shot underneath on lap seven and took the lead away.

Turner tried to pull away but a few more cautions kept things interesting. As the final laps came down, Torres made a last-ditch effort but it did not stick and Torres went around. On the restart, Mike Rosales roared into second and gave it everything he had, but as the checkered flag waved it was Turner taking his first and last win at El Paso Speedway Park. Rosales was second followed Jed Smith.

Lloyd Turner (0) won the Holley USRA Stock Car feature.

Christy Georges-Barnett went straight to the front in the USRA Modified main event but was held up by lappers. It took Jake Gallardo seven laps to get around Georges-Barnett and steal the lead away. A clean restart with 20 laps to go had both drivers pulling away again but this time Ralph Adams Jr. was there. With 11 laps remaining, Royal Jones was on a drive but getting a little too much coming out of turn four and into the wall with his side would brought out the yellow.

A clean restart had the top three pulling from the pack but might as well have finished it right there because as the checkered flag waved it was Gallardo showing them how it's done for the last USRA Modified win ever at 'The Park.' Georges-Barnett was close tonight but second was where she landed. Adams put it on the box in third.

Jake Gallardo won the USRA Modified feature.

The Out-Pace USRA B-Mods are always likely to put on a show at 'The Park' and tonight was no exception as they ran second to last. It was a 20-lap attempt with countless yellows in between green and checkered.

Paddy Rush, involved early in a crash, went all the way to the back as he battled for the track championship with John Carney. Sean Bowman was the early leader but it didn’t take long to have all kinds of company from Jimmy Ray and Carney. After a caution with 17 laps to go, Ray slid underneath Bowman and stole the lead like a thief in the night. With five laps finally complete and 15 to go, all looked good to roll but just after Gregory Gorham moved his way into second the caution flew.

Wikth seven laps to go, Ray led Gorham but pulled off under yellow. Gorham inherited the spot with Jesse Haney right on shis tail for a couple of laps but unable get there. It was no contest from there as Gorham took it all the way to the checkered flag making it look smooth tonight. Haney had a great run to end his season in second and Justin Allen was third after a blistering drive from way back in the start.

An end has come to an era. The memories we have will be the only thing left soon. But as most of us would agree, the memories here will last a lifetime. El Paso Speedway Park has been a great place far racing and friendship in the last 35 years and as we move onto bigger things, we must say thank you to everyone who has been apart of this great racing tradition for so long. Racing will continue at Southern New Mexico Speedway every Saturday night, but for now we say "Thank you," and we hope to see you again real soon.
