Turner captures USRA Modified win at Lucas Oil Speedway; Bryant also prevails

WHEATLAND, Mo.—Eric Turner rode the high line around Lucas Oil Speedway to his second victory of the season, taking Saturday night's featured Pitts Homes USRA Modified win in a duel with Jeff Cutshaw.

Turner, of Hermitage, earned $1,000 from Rains Ice on Hunting for Heroes Night at the Races Presented by KMIZ ABC 17.

Turner had more late-race drama than he wanted. With the checkers in sight on the 25th and final lap, a caution flag came out after Dwight Niehoff spun in turn four. That set up a one-lap shootout for the win.

But Turner, who had opened a 12-car length lead over Cutshaw and had it wiped out after the caution, pulled away on the restart to earn the victory.

Cutshaw grabbed the lead on lap five form Tad Davis with Turner in pursuit. He moved to the outside groove and went past Cutshaw on lap 15.

"That was a good race. I didn't know really what to do, it was kind of a gamble to go up there on the top," Turning said, noting that he had wanted to run that line all season but the track had not been conducive to doing so.

Cutshaw, the division's points leader, wound up second with Johnny Fennewald of Appleton City third.

John Sheets earned the $100 product certificate Out-Pace Racing Products Featured Class Hard-Charger Award, advancing from 21st to sixth.

Bryant wins, then crashes: Just after crossing the finish line for his second feature victory of the season, Andy Bryant's car veered right and into the wall entering turn one. The car was damaged, but he was not injured.

"The right front caught when I got past the flag stand. I don't know," Bryant said in a somewhat-subdued victory lane celebration, his towed car behind him.

Bryant, of Fort Scott, Kan., took command on lap three, taking over the lead from pole-sitter J.C. Morton. Lebanon's Kris Jackson finished second and Springfield's Morton wound up third. For Morton, the season points leader, it was his sixth straight finish of fourth or better in as many races.

The program was part of a big weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway, that includes the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series. The 5th annual John Haas Memorial Drag Boat Classic concludes on Sunday as eliminations begin at 9 a.m.
