Davis best in barnburner at Chateau Raceway

LANSING, Minn.—It was a hot and sultry evening for stock car racing at Chateau Raceway this week. The program was presented by Auto Value Parts of Albert Lea & Austin along with R&S Racing of Albert Lea and Power 96.1FM. Several drivers continued their dominance this week and the USRA Modifieds had another great feature race.

The KIK Graphics & Printing USRA B-Mods had a much better race this week when compared to the last two shows. Just a couple of cautions would slow the pace and the last yellow flag would set up a two lap dash to the checkered flag.

Kylie Kath led from the drop of the green flag and held off younger brother Kadden to snare his fifth feature win and this was his fourth in a row. Scott Demmer finished in the third position with Mark Wytaske and Dan Tenold in the top five.

Nick Stroupe from Iron Station, N.C., who is in the area for the big World Modified Dirt Track Championship at Deer Creek next week, started on the pole for the French’s Repair & Fabrication USRA Modified feature. Stroupe would lead with Darwyn Karau and Jason Cummins closed behind. Cummins passed Karau and then challenged Stroupe. A couple of quick yellows would keep the field tight.

Meanwhile eyes watched Brandon Davis who had a flat tire in his heat race and rolled off in the eleventh spot. Davis was up to sixth on lap 3 and then in a spectacular move vaulted to fourth. Davis was far from done when he zipped past Karau for third on the eighth circuit. At this point Stroupe had a huge advantage over Cummins. But Greg Jensen had a breakdown on lap 15 to bring out the yellow and that extinguished Stroupe’s lead. On the restart Davis blasted the cushion on the top side of the track and passed Cummins for second. Davis then reeled in Stroupe on lap 17 and the battle was on. Davis ran the high line in turns one and two and the low groove in three and four.

Davis would get up alongside Stroupe but just could not quite get by. With five to go Davis got a little above the cushion and Stroupe opened the lead up. But Davis was undaunted and quickly closed back in on the leader. The white flag came out and Davis changed his line in turn one and drove to the inside of Stroupe. Davis took the lead in turn three and beat Stroupe to the checkered flag for his fourth win of the year.

Stroupe finished second but was disqualified in post-race tech for not having the mandated 8,000-rpm chip in his ignition box, so that moved Cummins to second, Karau to third, Doug Hillson to fourth and Tommy Myer fifth.

Just a reminder that there is no racing this Friday, July 24. Racing will resume at Chateau Raceway on Friday, July 31, with racing at 7:00 p.m.
