Schiffelbein knocks off Smith in USRA B-Mods at Lakeside

KANSAS CITY, Kan.--For another race night during the 2015 season, the folks at the Lakeside Speedway were able to out-fox Mother Nature, yet again. Friday night’s races were contested on a surface that had been plastered with moisture all week long. It meant that the drivers were going to see a heavy race track one more time this year and that usually means horsepower comes into play.

Coming into Friday night’s action Brad Smith, in the USRA B Mod class, was the hottest driver at Lakeside Speedway. Smith had won the last three features and was looking for #4 Friday night.

Smith would have his work cut out for him as Randal Schiffelbein Jr. and two-time winner Ed Noll would make up the front row to start the main event. Both of those drivers would be tough to beat from the front.

Schiffelbein, who has been racing at Lakeside regularly after missing opening night, got off on the right foot by winning the first heat of the night. Schiffelbein was a rocket. The success carried over into the feature event. Schiffelbein got out to the early lead, but could he hold the likes of Smith, Noll, Nick Newton and Eddie Schwope? Only time would tell.

Schiffelbein kept his lead all night long. The strong race was going on behind him for 2nd as Smith and Noll went back and forth at one another. Each would keep Schiffelbein in their sites but couldn’t mount a real charge.

In the end it would be Schiffelbein securing the win, as he became the third different feature winner in the USRA B-Mods this season. Smith won the battle for second over Noll, who finished third. Fourth went to Newton and Schwope finished in fifth.

Schwope’s top-5 finish propelled him into the points lead at the end of the night.

USRA B-Mod heat race winners were Schiffelbein, Noll Smith and Newton.

The USRA Stock Car division saw a lower than normal car count, but they still provided some of the most exciting racing of the night. Jeff Elder started his night off with a strong run in his heat race and it would carry over to the start of the feature event.

Kevin McGinnis and Elder would bring the field to the green flag. Elder would take the top spot and looked solid at the front of the field. Several drivers were jockeying for position behind the leaders. Drivers who started further back were starting to clear traffic and make their way to the front.

Elder, meanwhile, kept on chugging out front. He would hold the lead until troubles would take him out of the running. Ready to pounce after Elder’s trouble was Jason Ryun. Ryun is filling in for Anthony Whitham after he got injured and unable to race. Choosing Ryun was a good one.

Ryun stayed out in the front the rest of the way taking the win. Ryun becomes the fifth different winner in the USRA Stock Car division this season. The Stock Cars have the most winners of any class at Lakeside Speedway.

USRA Stock Car heat race winners were Elder and Ryun.

Kerry Davis took home the win in the USRA Modified class on opening night. Since then he has had some good runs, but he hadn’t gotten back into victory lane since that night. Friday night Davis knocked the door down to victory lane once more.

Starting on the outside of the front row of the "A" Main it didn’t take long for Davis to take the lead on the opening lap. Not only did he grab the lead at the start, but he would hold it for the entire race on the way to win #2 of the season.

Darron Fuqua made a couple of charges at Davis but wasn’t able to get the job done. While Fuqua was working a plan to get around Davis, he didn’t see last year’s champ, Nic Bidinger, coming on to challenge him in the last few laps. In the end Bidinger would take the battle for the runner-up spot.

Fuqua finished third, fourth went to Josh Everhart and Larry Clawson took home the fifth spot.

USRA Modified heat race wins went to Davis and Everhart.

Racing action continues next Friday night, May 15. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps will be at 6:45 and the first race goes green at 7:30. Adult tickets are $12, kids ages 7-12 are $6, children under 6 are free and military personnel, students and seniors get in for $10 with proper ID.
