Fitzpatrick wins second USRA Hobby Stock Nationals

HARTFORD, S.D. -- The 6th Annual USRA Hobby Stock Nationals almost went by the wayside. With the assistance of sponsors like Olivier Logistics, RPM Motorsports, Gary's Tire and Performance One, the growing I-90 Speedway special was rescheduled for championship night on Saturday.

It didn't take long for Dylan Fitzpatrick, winner of the 2011 Hobby Stock Nationals, to get past front row starters Brian Campbell and Matt Grisham. Unfortunately, the race never gained the momentum that the drivers and fans were hoping for as the race was bombarded with cautions. Fitzpatrick had no trouble holding his lead before a caution eight laps into the race. Zach Oliver was able to race his way into contention as he had come from 10th to second. Mike Chaney also had an impressive run, going from 14th to third. But the race had exceeded I-90 Speedway's 20-minute limit on features. Five laps were cut from the 15 lap A-Main and the race turned into a green/white/checker finish. Given the extra five laps, Oliver or Chaney may have had a chance at the win. But, Fitzpatrick handled the final two laps without problem to win the season's biggest Hobby Stock event.

"There's a rut going into one," Fitzpatrick said. "I used it to my advantage. The car has been great all year."

Oliver claimed second after winning the last two Hobby Stock Nationals. Chaney was third. Chaney also claimed the track title in the USRA Hobby Stock Division. He trailed Dustin Gulbrandson by a single point before the feature. Gulbrandson had a radiator issue that kept him in the work area too long to make it back onto the track for the next green flag. Travis Vanden Top gained four positions to finish fourth. Brian Hoing also moved up four spots to take fifth.

Fitzpatrick also claimed the Progressive Jackpot which was introduced during last year's Hobby Stock Nationals. Anybody can add to the winner's share throughout the night. Another $253 in Jackpot money was added to Fitzpatrick's $500 winner's check for a total of $753 which was presented to him on a giant check provided by Checkered Grafx of Hartford.

Tim Dann trailed Dave Kennedy by four points entering the USRA B-Mod feature. Dann put his stamp on the race right away. The defending track champion zoomed past Doug Wallis on a lap three restart and never looked back. Kennedy wasn't able to get through traffic as quickly as Dann over the first few laps but he found his rhythm late and was battling for second when he spun in front of the white flag. Kevin Joachim was scored in second and Brock Hess finished third ahead of Chris Goetz and Chase Kuhlman.

Dann ended up winning the division crown by 19 points over Kennedy. He now has two USRA B-Mod track titles to go along with his two Wissota Super Stock championships ('05 & '07).

I-90 Speedway's awards banquet is scheduled for Saturday, October 18 at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls. Tickets are available through October 13 at $32. For more information, log onto www.i90speedway.com.
