Martin, Waltner winners at I-90 Speedway

HARTFORD, S.D. -- Fans were treated to some incredibly exciting racing in every division on Coca-Cola night Saturday at I-90 Speedway.

Marty Myers probably had nightmares about the final lap of the 15-lap USRA B-Mod main event. Myers jumped out to a nice lead early. Meanwhile, Dennis Martin was slowly reeling in the leader after starting sixth. With Martin right on his tail, Myers missed his mark in turn two of the white flag lap allowing Martin to make the pass. Not throwing in the towel, Myers drove hard into the third turn in a desperate attempt to overtake Martin. However, Myers got into the side of Chris Goetz's car. The caution was thrown. Martin then outraced Brock Hess and Dudley Schroeder Jr. for the win, his third of the year. Myers' accident forced him to a 16th-place finish.

The points lead also changed in the USRA B-Mod division. Defending track champion Tim Dann leads Dave Kennedy by six points while Martin closed to within 25 points.

You couldn't ask for a better lead-in to this Saturday's USRA Hobby Stock Nationals at I-90 Speedway. Logan Fitzpatrick battled with Tim Waltner for 12 straight laps. Waltner took the lead away from Fitzpatrick on the third lap but Fitzpatrick went to the front again on lap 4. He held that spot until the final lap when he left his line in turn two. It was the opening Waltner needed to get by and chalk up his third win of the year. It was also the 30th of his career, something only nine other drivers have accomplished at I-90 Speedway. Three other drivers also got past Fitzpatrick on the final lap. Brian Hoing finished second. Zach Olivier came from 11th to third. Mike Chaney was fourth.

The race set up an incredible storyline for the USRA Hobby Stock Nationals. Dustin Gulbrandson will enter the race with just a two point lead over Mike Chaney and a three point lead over Zach Olivier, the winner of the last two USRA Hobby Stock Nationals.

I-90 Speedway presents the USRA Hobby Stock Nationals featuring the I-90 Progressive Jackpot on Saturday, Aug. 23. The race starts at $500 to win. From the time the gates open until the end of intermission fans, drivers, sponsors, anybody can add to the Progressive Jackpot which goes to the Hobby Stock Nationals winner. Last year, contributions from $1 to $100 were received throughout the night. A jackpot of $643 was added to Zach Olivier's winner's check for a $1143 payout! This year's race will include added incentives from race sponsor Furby's Auto and Performance One. Track announcers Donn MacArthur and Steve Zwemke will man the Progressive Jackpot table in front of the beer stand and provide constant updates on the amount during the night.
