HUMBOLDT, Kan. -- The long Independence Day weekend kicked off on Thursday, July 3, at Humboldt Speedway with an enormous fireworks display and red hot racing action on the Kansas dirt.

Race fans Jim and Becky Grubber and the Jeremy Chambers Race team combined forces and offered up $50 to each class for the longest tow by a driver in each division and the hard charger in each division. Added money donated by track officials brought the USRA B-Mod purse to $500 to win. USRA Modifieds raced for a cool $2,000 to win. USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Modifieds were all in contention for valuable USRA national points, which made for some really good racing action for the fans in the stands.

The big show was, as always, the USRA Modifieds feature, won by Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo. Payne led the 35-lap event wire to wire. Runner-up was Thomas Tillison Jr. Matt Dotson finished third. The top five were rounded out by Darron Fuqua and Ryan Phillips. Burlington, Iowa, driver Ryan Cook took the cash for longest tow and Dotson passed the most cars, coming out of one of the “B” features to finish third.

With the long weekend and the chance for USRA national points, the USRA Stock Car division ranks tripled in size Friday night. The feature was captured by Michael Harward of Floris, Iowa. Second went to local ace David Matlock while Tyler James, James King and Corey Strothman rounded out the “fab five.” Matlock was deemed the hard charger while Corey Strothman came all the way from Mt. Union, Iowa, making his the longest tow.

The massive and hotly contested USRA B-Mod feature saw Bonner Springs brothers Ethan and Lucas Issacs finish 1-2. Third was Yancy Shepard from Smithville, Mo.,, who also made the longest haul. Tim Phillips was fourth and Jimmie Davis fifth. Tyler Kidwell passed more cars than anyone else in the feature and was crowned hard charger.

Coming up next Friday, July 11, fans are encouraged to wear their “Daisy Dukes and Cowboy Boots” to the races. Regular admission rates will apply. The Midwest Outlaw Vintage Racers will be making their first appearance of the season.
