Drivers from 5 states participate in the Troy Jech Memorial

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (July 27, 2002) - This week saw a special feature for the Modified Lite cars with the Troy Jech Memorial race. The race was part of a 2-night swing at Lansing and Deer Creek Speedway paying $500.00 to win each night with $100.00 for longest haul and $200.00 bonus to one lucky driver is they can win both nights. Action saw drivers from Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Arizona and Colorado on hand to do battle on the high bank track in SE MN. It was some great racing action in all classes with a short 15 minute rain delay as the modifieds were ready to take to the track for their heat race action. With a little help from all of the drivers on hand the track was worked back in and ready for a super fast race track the rest of the evening. A very large crowd was on hand to view the action as many tracks were rained out throughout the Midwest, the rain gods were blessing the facility again this week and the complete show was completed around 10:30 with the rain delay.

The Midwest Modifieds were up first for their feature action with Albert Wytaske jumping into the early lead. Behind Wytaske two and three wide battles were the norm for the feature. Kenny Wytaske was working his way up through the field from his sixth place starting position and after three laps worked to the outside of Dain Schultz to take over the second spot. Kenny worked up to the rear bumper of Albert as the caution flew for a spin by Neil Eckhart in one and two for the only yellow of the race. Three laps after restart Kenny moved by Albert to take over the top point and continued on for the win, his fifth of the season at the track.

WISSOTA Super Stocks had another great race with Bill Stettner and Dave Haberman sharing the front row. Haberman got the jump on the field after a single file restart with the top 6 cars falling into side by side racing as the first racing caution flew for an incident between Tyler Rubin and Chris Klinger ending both drivers nights. On the restart Haberman continued with the lead as Mark Teske worked up to battle with Stettner for the second spot. In the pack from fifth place on back the field was two wide and at times three wide for position as Bill Clemens pulled up in corner one with both right side tires flat. On the restart Teske had his hands full with Kevin Hager as Stettner moved into battle with Haberman for the top spot. The top eight cars started to pull away from the field as Teske cleared into the third spot and went to work on Stettner for the second spot. As Teske took over the second spot Jason Johnson and Hager got together with Johnson getting tagged for the incident. Two laps after restart Teske pulled up to battle with Haberman for the top spot. These two battled side by side for four laps until Teske was able to take the point and run to the checkers for his fourth win of the season at the track.

The Open Modifieds had yellow fever tonight with 10 cautions in the first thirteen laps causing the feature to be run green/white/checkers at the end. Todd Scharkey was strong up front passing Bob Timm on the first lap to take over the point. LeRoy Scharkey was running strong up through the field until his car was unable to move during one of the restarts. Todd Scharkey was able to continue to run strong up front to take home his third win of the season at the track.

A very nice field of seventeen Late Models were on hand tonight as some of the northern drivers made the haul down to race after other tracks rained out. Lance Matthees started on the pole and used it to his advantage. Matthees was dominate up front running the low side of the track with the caution free feature Matthees was able to work up to the tenth spot while lapping the field. Tim Patchen, Keith Foss and Mark Teske had a good battle for the fourth spot as Ashley Anderson was working his way up from the eighth starting position. Anderson was running the high line of the track and methodically worked his way by the cars up front. By the halfway point of the feature Matthees had pulled out to a straight away lead and was on his way to another victory at the track. Anderson worked his way up into the second spot with seven laps to go but Matthees had built up a phenomenal lead and won by almost half a lap for this second win at the track this year.

The WISSOTA Street stocks took to the track next with Jeff Brauer and John Bushman pacing the field. Jim Gustafson started the second row behind Brauer and the two drove past Bushman to battle up front for the point. Steve Eischens, Greg Erickson and Travis Krause all worked up into the top and the three drivers battled with each other for the third spot on the track. Just before the half-way point Gustafson made the pass on Brauer for the top spot as Eischens, Erickson and Krause worked their way up to battle with Brauer. Each driver took the upper hand in their battle with Brauer to work up through the field. Only one late caution bunched up the drivers but Gustafson was able to hold the charge of Eischens to take home his eighth win of the season at the track.

The Modified Lite's were up next for their 24 car 24 lap feature race as part of the two night Troy Jech Memorial race. Troy Jech was a local Modified lite driver who died of injuries sustained during a snowmobile accident two years ago. Troy and his brother Jeff ran the J&J racing team and Jeff continues to be one of the dominant racers here in SE Mn. The other dominant driver this year is Brian Shaw and Shaw showed the travelers exactly why he is hard to beat at the track. On the completion of the second lap Shaw had gained the lead and never looked back. The racing action was very fast in the class with many two, three and four wide battles occurring throughout the field. The class ran flawlessly without a caution thrown during the race the leader of the race lapped up to the thirteenth position. Troy Jech and Craig Shaw battled for most of the feature for the third spot with Jech finally gaining the advantage. Brian continued to roll through the field to the checkers with a straight lead for his eighth win of the season at the track.
