New winners in all but one class at Deer Creek

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (July 20, 2002) - A steamy Saturday night greeted race fans at Deer Creek Speedway for the Brauer Roofing sponsored night. 114 racers checked into the back gate an excellent racing surface greeted the drivers and fans alike.

The Midwest Modified feature was up on the track first with Chad Herman jumping into the early lead. Two and three wide battles behind the leader were the norm in all classes tonight with Harlan Morehart Jr. Neil Eckhart and Jesse Frericks battling for the second spot. Eckhart finally gained the advantage for the second spot and started to pursue Herman for the top spot. Fifth place on back were running three wide for most of the race as many fast cars were working their way up to the front. Finally the top five settled into a long green flag run with Nick Kramer and Dan Fagerlind running side by side for the sixth spot for four laps until Fagerlind had mechanical problems and pulled off. At the finish it was Herman getting his first win of the season at the speedway.

The super stock feature was up next with Kevin Adams and Gary Schmidt starting on the front row. On the first start there was a ten car pileup on the track with all drivers being able to continue. On the restart Adams gained the advantage with Schmidt and Bill Clemens running side by side for second. Clemens kept working the high line but to no avail and dropped to the low side of the track as Mark Teske joined in on the battle. These three battled until Clemens finally worked around Schmidt with Teske following closely into third. As Adams was running out front on the low line Clemens decided to try the high line for the win. Coming to the white flag Teske pulled along side Clemens and bumped into the back of Adams. Adams held the line to take his first feature win of the season with Teske nipping Clemens at the line for second.

The Modifieds pulled out for their feature next with Todd Scharkey and Tim Eisenberg sharing the front row. Jay Poindinger pulled up to battle with the front two on the drop of the green and the three went side by side for two laps until Scharkey pulled off into the infield with problems. Poindinger gained the advantage with Todd Klees working on Eisenberg for the second spot. Klees quickly gained the advantage and went to work on Poindinger for the top spot. These two ran side by side for three laps until Klees gained the top spot. Behind them some great two wide battles were taking place as both the high and low lines came in for the mods. Dave Siercks worked his way forward into a battle with Eisenberg for third with Paul Novotny sitting right there waiting for a way past. Jay Ihrke started the feature in thirteenth place and was making his way forward and followed Novotny past Eisenberg into the top five. Leroy Scharkey also was working his way forward and moved past Novotny and Ihrke for the third spot and went to work on Poindinger for the second spot. The two made light contact with Poindinger spinning out and Scharkey sent to the rear for the call. On the restart Klees took the point home to his first feature win of the season at the Speedway.

The track was misted lightly before the late model feature and it was lightning fast as Jon Chrest and Ben Mattick paced the field. Mattick pulled into the lead on the second lap as Chrest spun into the infield loosing his driveshaft on the front straight. On the restart Mike Sorensen moved into the second spot getting past Steve Eisenberg with Mark Teske running the high side of the track to battle for the third spot. Sorensen moved past Mattick three laps later to take over the point. The Patchen's were working hard on moving up through the field and they had some of the best racing of the night. They all made a little contact with each other a couple different times. The three of them swapped spots a few times and put on a very enjoyable show for the fans. Up front it was Mike Sorensen all the way to his first ever feature win in the Late Model at the track.

With three cautions or more during each of the first three features tonight the Street Stocks went caution free for the fifteen lap feature. Jeff Brauer started on the pole and used it to his advantage on the start and led the first lap. Greg Erickson and Travis Krause battled side by side for the second spot. Danny Hanson joined into the battle with Krause and Erickson and move by them both to take over the second spot. One lap later Hanson moved into the lead as Krause moved past Erickson to battle with Brauer for the second spot. After clearing Brauer Krause moved into battle with Hanson for the top spot. After starting tenth on the field Jim Gustafson was working his way forward and moved into the top five after five laps. Krause worked past Hanson and the two started to pull away from the field as Hanson pulled off the track. Gustafson worked past Erickson and Brauer to move into the second spot but without the benefit of a caution Krause was too far gone to catch. Krause took home his first win of the season at the track.
