Busy week comes to close at Willamette Speedway

LEBANON, Ore. -- Three whole events were completed in four days at Willamette Speedway to conclude a very busy week for the historic 1/3-mile dirt oval. The whole week began on Independence Day for the debut of the Interstate Sprint Car Series at the facility along with the USRA Modifieds and Mini-Trucks. Friday night had the Karts back in action while the Willamette 100 was Saturday, July 7. Classes in action were the DirtCar Super Late Models, USRA Modifieds, Sportsmans and Open Kage.

Justin Evans of Lebanon earned his first USRA Modified feature win of the year but would earn the check the hard way by holding back the potential challengers. Evans would receive considerable pressure from defending champion Dustin Dittman who was right there with him until the very end.

Dustin Dittman, of Albany, raced hard and despite some body damage was clearly still fast and very competitive. Dittman would finish in second while fellow Albany driver Brett James was third. Albany’s Craig Hanson was fourth and Bubba Foster from Dayton finished fifth to complete the top 5. Fast qualifier of the night was Brett James at 16.976 seconds and Dittman won the trophy dash. Evans and Crawfordsville chauffer Tom Yeack were both heat race winners.

A thrilling conclusion came in the last laps of the USRA Modified feature between Jeremy Shank and Evans. Shank came across the line in first but when the officials went back through the lapped charts it was apparent that he was off the track for two laps in the work area. Being a one hundred lap race the caution laps were being counted and when it was all said and Evans won his second straight feature for the classification.

Evans also became the first repeat winner in the USRA Modifieds. Crawfordsville drivers Kyle Yeack finished in second followed by his brother, Tom Yeack, in third. Rod McCombs of Albany was fourth and Kevin Keeney from Sweet Home finished in fifth. Quick time of the night was Craig Cassell of Albany at 17.171 seconds, Evans won the trophy dash, and the heat race winners were Coburg pilots Ron Wilson and Jesse Williamson.
