Hovden, Moudry, Wayne, Hills start 4th of July weekend in Fayette County Speedway victory lane
Ben Moudry won the USRA B-Mod main event
Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, got the Independence Day weekend started right with another excellent night of racing at the 3/8-mile speedway.
In the USRA B-Mod feature race, Protivin’s Ben Moudry put on a show for the fans and the race sponsor for the speedway, The Place in Protivin, as he led all 20 laps of the main event to pick up his first win of the season at FCS. Moudry held off constant pressure from Ionia’s Brian Mahlstedt, who finished in the runner-up spot. Decorah’s Keagen Einck had a strong run as he captured third place, while Kyle Anderson (Decorah) was fourth and Josh Roney (Postville) was fifth in his Rage Chassis, which got a brand-new wrap earlier in the day.
The Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock feature had one of the most exciting finishes of the night. It was Justin Lichty (Waterloo) and Josh Ludeking (Decorah) that took the white flag first, but neither of them would finish inside the top 12 as the two battled through turn one before Lichty got a flat tire that led to the two getting tangled up and spinning out in front of the entire field. Ludeking also suffered a flat tire in the scrumb, which took both drivers out of contention.
Benefiting from the situation was Independence driver Marcus Wayne who wheeled the No. 18 hot rod that is owned by Dru Kueker to Victory Lane. Wayne moved up eight spots in the feature to finish ahead of Adam Speicher (Fredericksburg) and Paul Seabrooke (Decorah) for the top three. Fourth place went to Hawkeye’s Justin Hanson, while Steve Larson of Decorah fought back from some early race trouble to take fifth.
Like the story has been for much of the season so far, it was Decorah driver Mitch Hovden who again found his way to the winner’s circle as he picked up win No. 5 of the season at FCS in the Medieval USRA Stock Car division. Hovden led early and often from his outside pole starting spot as he held off Kyle Falck (Decorah) for the win. In third was Brayden Gjere of Mabel, Minn., who advanced six spots in the 20-lap feature. Lynn Panos (Calmar) finished fourth, while last week’s winner Kevin Donlan (Decorah) was fifth.
The USRA Tuner feature race featured plenty of excitement for the fans with Elkader’s Josh Hills getting his first win of the season. Hills jumped ahead eight spots to win the hard charger designation, as a lap-1 wreck dropped five cars from the race. In second place was Lawler’s Mitch Balik, and Brad Stahl of Castalia was third. Fourth place went to Braiden Schaufenbuel of New Hampton as the youngster celebrated his birthday week with a career-best finish. Rounding out the top five was Josh Harms of Postville.
Racing will be back at Fayette County Speedway next Friday night for the Barker Memorial 50 which will pay $2,000 to the winner of the 50-lap Medieval USRA Stock Car feature. The overall purse for the race will be over $10,000 as racers, fans and friends of the late Larry Barker will honor his memory with a great night of racing. Also competing will be the other four weekly classes including the USRA B-Mods, Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks, USRA Tuners and Mod Lites.
