Royal Jones won the USRA Modified main event.
The state-of-the-art Vado Speedway Park was back in action Saturday, May 15, with the running of another Hot City Nights event featuring USRA Modifieds, Medieval USRA Stock Cars and the first appearance by the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks.
The first ever appearance by the USRA Hobby Stocks saw Adam Wright on the pole. The race did not disappoint as outside front row starter Victor Colorbio got out front and held off hard-charging Matthew Machen and Cory Stone throughout several cautions with Stone able to steal the second spot late in the going, while Brandon Kuykendall and Ryder McCutcheon, who started 14th and 16th, respectively, were working toward the front as well.
As the laps wound down, Colorbio was able to hold on to cross the line first with Stone second, Machen fourth, ahead of Craig Walker and Nathan Machen rounding out the top five. Colorbio was then disqualified in post-race tech, handing the win to Stone.
The USRA Stock Car main event was up next with Michael Zimmerman on the pole. Zimmerman and Xander Parra lead the field to the green with Parra taking the lead on lap one. All eyes were on 10th starting Jeremey Bradley, 14th starting Bryan Bennett, along with Jed Smith and Jason Josselyn, who were all charging forward through the field on their way toward the front.
Bradley was able to get to the top spot first and he and Bennett put on a great show for the race lead throughout much of the 20-lap event. Josselyn and Smith were involved in a turn three crash that send both of them to the tail and kept the field bunched up throughout the majority of the main.
As the laps wound down the Bradley-Bennett battled continued to be hotly contested with Bradley able to hold off Bennett for his first win at Vado. Bennett came home second with Garrett Stearns, Devon Jobin and Jonathan Burton rounding out the top five finishers.
The USRA Modifieds were the final event of the night and did not disappoint. Royal Jones would win a near photo finish over Mark Smith by just 0.090 seconds for his first Modified victory of the season.
The race was outstanding from start to finish as Jaime Torres and Christy Barnett battled side by side for the lead for the majority of the first half of the race swapping the top spot over and over, while Jones, who started 5th was working his way around the bottom of the speedway and joined the battle out front before the midpoint of the event.
Smith, Josh Cain and 20th starting Nick Rivera were also working their way toward the top five while Jones moved in to the leaders. Royal was able to steal the race lead off turn four and then set off out front while Smith, Torres and Barnett continued to battle for the runner up spot. Two late race caution flags bunched the field and allowed Smith to try to steal the lead from Jones, but his efforts were not quite enough as Jones held on for the victory.
Smith crossed the line in second with Rivera charging to third ahead of 12th starting Todd Harper and Torres in the top five. Smith was later disqualified in post race tech, elevating Rivera to second and moving everyone up in the finishing order.
