Jones steps down as Sports Park Raceway promoter

Andy Jones has announced that he is stepping down as promoter of the Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

“I was humbled by the community and racer support for us when we made the decision earlier this year to take on operations of the facility,” Jones said. "We had our ups and downs this year, but unfortunately the downs just far outweighed the ups.”

To say that the 2020 season as promoter of the facility has been a tough one for Jones and his family may be the understatement of the year.

Almost immediately after diving into this venture, the COVID-19 panic set in. The track was unable to open on time and up and through the season finale was saddled with strict social gathering rules that hindered their progress. Then, on the last day of May, Jones’s 17-year-old son, Colton, unexpectedly died.

During his short time at the track, Jones and his team performed tons of dirt work to the track and various landscaping around the facility, the installation of a MyLaps transponder system and many other improvements to the venue.

“It will be in great shape for the next captain.”

During the 2020 season, the Sports Park Raceway was sanctioned by the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series and featured USRA Modifieds, American Racer USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners.

The Sports Park Raceway is located 0.9 mile north of US 20 on US 169, then 0.5 mile east on 230th in Fort Dodge, Iowa. To learn more about the track, visit SportsParkRaceway.com.
