Hovden, Roney fly to Fourth of July feature wins at Upper Iowa Speedway

The “Road to Independence” reached its destination on Saturday, July 4, when the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis landed in Decorah, Iowa, at the Upper Iowa Speedway.

Sponsored by Weis Buick, the last of five straight nights of racing concluded at the semi-banked 1/4-mile clay oval located at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds with American Racer USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods headlining the program while Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners completed a four-division card for the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series competitors.

Snagging his first Iron Man checkers of the season was done the hard way by Mitch Hovden of Decorah came from the outside of the fourth row of the starting grid to claim the victory.

Less than 24 hours after his win on Friday, fellow Decorah driver Kyle Falck settled for the runner-up paycheck Saturday while Dillon Anderson made it a sweep of the podium by the Nordic speedsters.

Polk City’s Steve Jackson claimed the fourth spot and the top five was rounded out by Troy Hansmeier of Waukon.

Another racer reeled in his first Iron Man trophy when Postville’s Josh Roney poste a wire-to-wire effort to pocket the $500 top prize and avoid a sweep of the hardware by hometown racers.

Like his brother, Decorah’s Dan Hovden started eighth but fell one spot short of joining him in the winner’s circle. Former USRA B-Mod national champ Troy Hovey of Decorah crossed the finish line third, Ben Moudry of Protivin wound up fourth and 11th-starting Taylor Skauge of Caledonia, Minn., completed the top five.

Steve Larson of Decorah topped the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock man event with Chris Hovden of Cresco taking the checkers in second place.

Paul Seabrooke of Elgin was third, fourth went to 12th-starting Steve Dwyer of La Crosse, Wis., and the fifth position fell to Friday’s feature winner at the Fayette County Speedway, Joshua Ludeking of Decorah.

Justin Anderson of Holmen, Wis., brought home the victor’s paycheck in the USRA Tuner class. The rest of the top five were Jeremiah Anderson of La Crosse, Wis., Ben Horsfall of Cresco, Micheal Reicks of New Hampton and Castalia’s Katie Stahl.

The Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge is back in action next Saturday, July 11, with American Racer USRA Stock Cars flying solo at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo. Although not an Iron Man show, USRA B-Mods are on the card during the regular weekly program at the I-35 Speedway, along with USRA Modifieds.

Launched in 2010 as a series for Stock Cars, the USRA B-Mod division was added to the Iron Man lineup in 2011. Between the two classes, 14 different champions have emerged from 19 title chases.

Derek Green of Granada, Minn., grabbed his second Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge title for the Stock Cars in 2019 while Jared Boumeester locked down his first crown in the B-Mods last year.

Past Stock Car champions include Green (2017, 2019), Dillon Anderson (2018), Kyle Falck (2016), Tom Schmitt (2012, 2015), Mitch Hovden (2013, 2014), Mike Van Genderen (2011) and Nathan Wood (2010).

Past B-Mod champions include Boumeester (2019), Dan Hovden (2017, 2018), Andy Bryant (2016), Dakota Foster (2015), Cory Crapser (2013, 2014), Trevor Hunt (2012) and Cayden Carter (2011).

All Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge events also award national points in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.
