CRESCO, Iowa -- The ninth night of points racing was on tap at the Cresco Speedway on Sunday, and the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series drivers delivered yet another stellar performance for the racing fans in attendance.

In the USRA Modified division, defending track champion Ron Konkel of Caledonia, Minn., scored his second victory of the season. Konkel set a blistering pace around the high side of the 3/8-mile clay oval and went untouched for the duration of the 20-lap main event. Current track points leader Kevin Pittman of Waterloo finished second, followed by Chad Lerch of Arlington. Alan Mondus of Lakeville, Minn., finished fourth after starting 10th on the grid, while opening night winner Darrin Walch of Postville rounded out the top five finishers.

Shawn Peter held off fellow Mabel, Minn., racer Brian Gjere to take home the top prize in the USRA Stock Car main event for the second time in four weeks. Defending track champ and current USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national points leader Tom Schmitt of Independence finished third, while Cresco's Shay Curtin was fourth and Lynn Panos of Protivin completed the first five finishers across the finish line.

Oelwein's Brian Kunkle solidified his position at the top of the USRA B-Modified points standings as he picked up the win on Sunday. After starting eighth, Kunkle methodically picked off competitors as he raced to his fifth victory of the season at Cresco. Raymond Lundry of Maynard pocketed the runner-up paycheck, Jeremy LaPlant of Elgin took third, Decorah's Shane Panos was fourth and Virgil Johnson of Waukon grabbed the fifth-place spot.

In USRA Hobby Stock action, Mitch Hovden of Decorah picked up his fourth victory of the year as he went wire to wire to finish ahead of Elma's Brandon Hare and David Lickteig of Cresco. Points leader Chris Hovden of Cresco was fourth at the finish, while Bernie Adams of Stacyville rounded out the top five.

The evening's most exciting finish came in the Outlaw Hobby main event. At the finish line, three cars traded paint for the win with Ben Moudry of Protivin barely edging out 11th-starting Pete Solum of Spring Grove, Minn., for the win. Waukon's Austin Curtin sits second in the track title chase, but has yet to pick up a win this season. Sunday night he came up just a few feet short and took home a third-place paycheck. Jason Borsheim of Mabel, Minn., took fourth place and points leader Patty Fosaaen of Waukon finished fifth after starting 10th.

The lights won't stay dark for long as the roar of engines will fill the Cresco, Iowa, skies this Thursday, July 13, as Featherlite presents the O’Reilly Auto Parts USMTS Modifieds as the hottest Modified drivers in the nation return to the Cresco clay for another $2,000-to-win show. Also on the racing card sponsored by Featherlite will be USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Hobbies racing for national and track points in the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series. Gates open 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30.

There will be no racing at the Cresco Speedway on Sunday, July 16.
