Home sweet home for Turner

Shadren Turner won the USRA Modified main event.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 19, 2025)—Shadren Turner took full advantage of a home-track opportunity Friday night at Lakeside Speedway, driving from his fifth-place starting spot to score an emotional win in front of family and friends with the USRA Heartland Modified Tour presented by Real Racing Wheels. The victory marked Turner’s fourth win of the 2025 season.

Defending race winner Nic Bidinger led the 25-lap feature to the green flag, but the hometown favorite Turner wasted little time, sweeping past for the lead on lap two. A caution for Lance Mari on lap six briefly slowed the action, but on the restart Tyler Wolff powered by Bidinger for the runner-up spot and immediately set his sights on Turner.

For the rest of the race, Wolff hounded Turner through heavy lapped traffic, looking high and low for a way around. Turner never flinched, attacking the lapped cars as fast as he could clear them while Wolff lurked inches off his bumper.

“Tim Karrick always tells me, ‘attack the lap cars,’” Turner said in victory lane. “I was in there just hanging on. We were running the top in the crumbs and I didn’t know if that was the smart thing to do or not, but it was working so I just held it to the floor and tried to steer it in the right direction. I’m glad it worked out.”

The win was especially meaningful for Turner, a St. Joseph, Missouri driver, who called the victory at his home track a dream come true.

“Oh man, I did not expect this to happen,” Turner added. “This is my home track so this is so special to win here in front of family and friends. It’s really special to have them all here.”

While Turner celebrated his fourth win of the season, the biggest shakeup may have come in the USRA Heartland Modified Tour championship battle. Coming into the night, Bobby Williams led the points by 28 over Brandon Givens. By the end of the race, after Givens ran fourth while Williams finished 12th, that margin shrunk to just nine points.

With only a handful of races left on the schedule, Givens has put himself in prime position to challenge for the championship, while Turner’s win and second-year driver Wyatt Gaggero’s steady runs have tightened the fight inside the top five.

The tour now heads to 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas, for night two of the weekend. Saturday’s race, the Dalice Franz Memorial, honors the late 81 Speedway Hall of Famer and pays $2,586 to win and $400 to start the A-Main. With the points battle heating up and a big payout on the line, another thrilling night of racing is expected.
