The Sandia Speedway launched the 2025 dirt track racing season in style on Thursday with Day 1 of the Southwest Stock Car Showdown, part of the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series with a $10,000 top prize awaiting Saturday's USRA Stock Car winner.
Fans witnessed fierce competition in the USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods, as drivers from across the Southwest and beyond battled it out on the Albuquerque oval. The event set an electrifying tone for the three-day showdown, with standout performances lighting up the night.
In the USRA Stock Cars, two feature races showcased the depth of talent in the field.
The first saw Colin Deming of Hobbs take the win in a 15-car lineup, starting second and holding strong to claim the top spot.
Jonathan Burton of Las Cruces charged from sixth to finish second while local favorite Ronnie Leathem Jr. of Albuquerque rounded out the podium in third after starting seventh.
The second feature belonged to Josh Cain of Rio Rancho, who surged from sixth to secure the victory in a 14-car field.
Jeffrey Abbey of Boyd, Texas, kept the pressure on the defending USRA Stock Car National Champion, finishing second after starting on the front row, and Cameron Starry of Corpus Christi, Texas, completed the top three.
Josh Cain won the second of two USRA Stock Car features during the Southwest Stock Car Showdown at the Sandia Speedway in Albuquerque, N.M., on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025.
The USRA B-Mod feature delivered its own excitement, with Rob Moseley of Los Lunas emerging victorious in a 17-car field.
Starting second, Moseley held off Hunter Sandy of Albuquerque, who finished second after starting on the pole.
Michael Hartman of Las Cruces stole the show with an incredible climb from 12th to third at the checkered flag.
The Southwest Stock Car Showdown’s opening night highlighted the competitive spirit of USRA racing, with New Mexico drivers like Deming, Cain, and Moseley asserting their dominance early in the weekend.
The mix of local talent and out-of-state contenders like Abbey and Starry added to the event’s appeal. With the track favoring bold moves and strategic driving, Day 1 set a high bar for the rest of the showdown.
Rob Mosely won the USRA B-Mod feature during the Southwest Stock Car Showdown at the Sandia Speedway in Albuquerque, N.M., on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025.
As the series rolls into Day 2, anticipation builds for another round of intense battles as the Southwest Stock Car Showdown continues to establish itself as a must-see event on the dirt track calendar.
