Hendrix makes it two in a row at Lucas Oil Speedway; Phillips, Jackson also prevail

David Hendrix continued his hot early season start, picking up his second straight Medieval USRA Stock Car triumph on Saturday night in Lucas Oil Speedway's headliner.

Other feature winners during Round 3 of the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series included Terry Phillips (USRA Modifieds) and Kris Jackson (USRA B-Mods).

A total of 90 cars checked into the pits as KY3 presented $5 Night at the Races.

In the night's added-lap, added-money feature it was all Hendrix as the Waynesville driver earned his second O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature victory in three attempts.

Leading all 25 laps, Hendrix cemented his hold on the top spot in championship points while picking up $750.

"That track was awesome. This is my favorite kind of track," Hendrix said. "The blacker it gets, the better we like it."

Hendrix started outside of Keller on the front row and sprinted to the lead at the start and led Doug Keller and Robert White until a caution on lap five. On the restart, White went around Keller and began to put pressure on Hendrix.

Hendrix was able to open a one-second lead by lap eight but another caution on the next circuit again bunched the field. As the race settled into a prolonged green-flag run, Hendrix built his lead over White to 1.7 seconds by lap 20, as the leaders began to deal with lapped traffic.

Handling the slower cars with little trouble, while the race remained caution-free, Hendrix drove away from there to win by 2.39 seconds over White, of Lebanon.

"I'm just thankful the car was working good," Hendrix said. "The brake pedal was getting a little spongy there for a while. I know Rob's real good running around the bottom. I saw when he got into second and I thought, 'Oh man, I've got to get my ducks in a row or I'm going to get passed.' "

Keller fell back to fifth before rallying to finish third. Lyle Dietrich was fourth and Jaylen Wettengel fifth.

Phillips wires USRA Modified field: Terry Phillips from Springfield set sail from the pole position and led every lap to win the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifeid main event.

Phillips, the USMTS points leader with two wins on the national touring circuit in 2021, finished 2.55 seconds in front of fellow front-row starter Chase Domer.

"This is a new car that I've never drove before," Phillips said. "I had another guy driving it and he told me it wasn't very good. I'm gonna have to argue with him about that.

"We just did a little testing here while we didn't have any traveling shows to go to. The track was in good shape. Thanks to the people for coming out. This is a pretty good crowd."

The only thing that slowed Phillips was the race's lone caution on lap two.

Matt Johnson rallied from 12th to finish third with track points leader Jason Pursley fourth and Dillon McCowan grabbing fifth.

Jackson earns B-Mod win: Reigning track champion Kris Jackson of Lebanon picked up his first feature win of the season, holding off a hard-charging J.C. Morton over the final 15 laps.

"Hats off to these guys on this race track," Jackson said, echoing Phillips' and David Hendrix's praise earlier to the track prep crew. "I know I'm probably the world's worst to get on them when it gets a little rough and rainy. But they do a fantastic job."

Jackson, who started sixth, moved into third behind J.C. Newell and Andy Byrant by lap four and, the next time around, emerged from a three-wide battle headed into turn three to take over the lead.

After a restart for a caution on lap six, Morton moved from his 13th-starting position and into second with Bryant third and Eric Turner fourth.

It didn't take long for Jackson and Morton to break away from the pack by half a straightaway. Jackson led Morton by two car lengths as they caught heavy lapped traffic on lap 15.

With both hugging the bottom groove, Morton finally went to the high side as the white flag waved. But he lost ground and Jackson was able to prevail by by five car lengths.

"I saw the (videoboard) coming down the backstretch and I saw him to the ouside," Jackson said. "I knew it would be hard for him to get around me on the top. The car was really good tonight. I have to thank my guys. This is the old, standard set-up and it was good."

Bryant finished third with Turner in fourth and Brian Bolin fifth.
