Richards makes long trip to Lebanon worthwhile

Hard-charging Jake Richards made the haul to the Lebanon Midway Speedway from Lansing, Kan. (about 203 miles) worth his time Friday night as he took control of the pack on lap four from defending Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion Kris Jackson and then withstood a two-lap shoot-out from both Jackson and current national points leader Dillon McCowan in an exciting 20-lap feature presented by S&S U-Pull-It Auto Parts.

After twoexciting qualifying heats, a three-row inversion placed Jackson, who was in a new chassis after they had just finished it up that day, with Lebanon's Dustin Atkinson to his outside while Richards and Tyler Knudtson occupied row two with heat winners Sam Petty and young Austin Seets in row three.

McCowan started 12th by virtue of his win in the last regular event.

The first start saw Kris Jackson grab the lead with Richards right on his bumper followed by Atkinson, Petty and Seets.

Caution waved as Atkinson was the meat of a three-wide sandwich for the spot and he spun. On the restart, Jackson fired quickly with Richards close behind while Petty, Knudtson and Seets were in tow as racing was all over the oval.

With Jackson working the new chassis, Richards saw an opening on lap four and opened a three-car advantage while deep in the pack McCowan was working the extreme top side and moved into the top five by lap six.

Richards showed patience and experience on the racy oval and was forcing Jackson and McCowan to dive for spots as McCowan took second from Jacksons on lap nine as there were many door-to-door battles all over.

On lap 14, Jackson moved around McCowan as the duo seemed to be gaining on Richards.

The final of four cautions waved on lap 18 as Jackson picked the top lane, forcing McCowan who had made a lot of ground upstairs to the bottom. On the restart, Richarda stayed smooth downstairs while Jackson swung up high with McCowan right along as just behind this trio was Seets and Brian Myers fighting for fourth along with Knudtson.

Heading for the checkered flag, Jackson took a bit higher line and jumped the berm in turn four, ending his run as Richards grabbed his first Lebanon Midway Speedway win followed closely by McCowan, Seets, Knudtson and Myers.

"We are setting our goal for a top five in USRA national points and made the haul down tonight," Richards said. "Competing against Kris and Dillon was a blast tonight and the track was great. Hopefully this gets us tuned in for the TJR Factory 56 B-Mod Nationals here in September as last year we had a blast and a great run."
