Elliott, Griffith, Gulbrandson golden in Great American Stock Car Shootout

The Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, kicked off the month of July on Wednesday with the final night of the Great American Stock Car Shootout featuring the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis.

Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks staged a 30-lap main event and it was five-time Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion Dustin Gulbrandson claiming victory and pocketing the $1,000 top prize.

The Sioux Falls, S.D., speedster drove his familiar white and orange No. 6 from the sixth starting spot to increase his two-day paycheck to $1,450 with his $300 King of the Hill triumph and $150 runner-up finish in Tuesday night’s Dash for Cash.


Dustin Gulbrandson won the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stock main event.

Scott Dobel of Manly held on to finish second in the main event with Eric Knutson of Slater snagging third and defending track and national champ Eric Stanton of Carlisle finishing fourth. Polesitter Daniel Ayers of Webster City rounded out the top five.

Jeremy Crimmins of Fort Dodge, Roger Haupt of Webster City, Levi Vander Weide of Sioux Falls, S.D., Todd Uhl of Sheldon and Bryce Sommerfeld of Fort Dodge completed the top ten.

A pair of Webster City homeboys took home the top two paychecks in the USRA B-Mods with Ty Griffith besting Doug McCollough for the $1,500 top prize.

Cody Thompson of Sioux City held off Decorah’s Dan Hovden for third and Jim Chisholm of Osage was fifth.

Ben Moudry of Protivin, who topped Tuesday’s Dash for Cash and King of the Hill match races, wound up sixth with polesitter Carter VanDenBerg of Oskaloosa seventh. Eighth went to Jake Sachau of Manning, the ninth spot went to Josh Roney of Postville and Joe Chisholm of Osage was the tenth driver to see the checkered flag.

The American Racer USRA Stock Cars provided the evening’s finale with a 35-lap battle that saw veteran hometown racer Mark Elliott earn a $2,000 payday as ‘The Terminator’ topped former Iron Man and national champions Dillon Anderson and Mitch Hovden of Decorah.

Abe Huls came from Carthage, Ill., to collect a fourth-place paycheck and Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., advanced five positions to finish fifth after winning Tuesday’s head-to-head King of the Hill competition.

Pat Graham of Ankeny held off Todd Staley of Webster City for sixth while Troy Hansmeier of Waukon raced from 16th on the grid to eighth at the finish line. Meanwhile, current national points leader Doug Keller of Easton, Mo., advanced eight spots to nab ninth-place money as Jesse Brown of Nashua rounded out the top ten.

The next event is slated for Saturday, July 11, for Car Load Night presented by NAPA Auto Parts featuring USRA Modifieds, American Racer USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners plus Super Late Models. Racing begins at 7:30.

Opening in July 1910, the Hamilton County Speedway is the oldest speedway in the state of Iowa. In 1938, work began on the current location at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The semi-banked half-mile dirt track was completed in the spring of 1939, and the first races were held on the track in September of that year.

The Hamilton County Speedway is located off US 20 at exit 140, then 1.2 miles north, then 0.5 mile east on Bank St., then 0.4 mile south on Bluff St. to the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Webster City, Iowa. The physical address is 1200 Bluff St, Webster City, IA 50595.
