Wheeler steals win with thrilling last-lap pass in Cowboy 100 Proof

In one of the most anticipated events of the year at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla., it was Muskogee's Chad Wheeler who walked away with the winner's hardware after 100 laps were complete in the Cowboy 100 Proof presented by Bravado Wireless... But not before multiple battles throughout the field that set up a thrilling last-lap, last-corner pass for the win.

Polesitter Kenny Gaddis jumped out to an early lead while rolling the bottom of the track to perfection. Gaddis caught the tail end of the field early as Joe Duvall gave chase with a major malfunction in the left front suspension of his Club 91 car that didn't seem to hinder him.

An early caution reset the field for a long green flag run that saw Kale Westover find the high side of the track and into the lead before the halfway point.

A caution on lap 56 brought the "competition red flag" for fuel and adjustments on the USRA Modifieds. On the ensuing restart, Westover jumped back to the high side with Wheeler in hot pursuit. Two more cautions over the final 44 laps jockeyed the field around, but up front it remained Westover and Wheeler on the point.

With 15 laps remaining, Wheeler steered his No. 88 machine to the bottom side of the 1/4-mile clay oval and started reeling in Westover, who was selling T-shirts on the high side. Wheeler showed a nose with about 10 laps to go but Westover pulled away with a lapped car slowing Wheeler.

After clearing lapped traffic, Wheeler started inching closer to Westover as the laps wound down. With the white flag displayed, Wheeler pulled alongside the No. 15 of Westover. The pair ran side-by-side for most of the last lap but it was Wheeler who hit his marks perfect on the bottom side of turns 3-4 and surged to the victory ahead of Westover and 18th-starting Tanner Mullens.

One hundred laps in July on a 100-degree day and we couldn't have asked for a better race. These drivers put on an awesome show and we are already looking forward to next year. A big thank you to Joe Duvall, Bravado Wireless, Ameriflex Hose, Pizza Express, Duvall Electric, Big Cat Transportation, Awesome Construction, Designs Unlimited, Five1Seven Designs, Deatherage Opticians and Fast Shafts.

Be sure to go support Night 2 of Duvall's "Funkadelic Dirt Track & Honky Tonk Extravaganza Tour" Saturday night at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Pryor Creek, Okla., and then the final night on Sunday at the Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Okla.
