Morning rain and overcast conditions couldn’t dampen Rapid Speedway Friday night as 92 cars checked in for action. It was a cool June evening, but the racing was hot as ever all night long.

The Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks had a repeat winner as Dustin Gulbrandson made it two in row at Rapid Speedway. Defending track champion Tyler Schlumbohm took the early lead off the front row with Gulbrandson in chase from the get-go. The two chased each other around the track for four laps until Schlumbohm jumped the cushion in turn 2 and allowed Gulbrandson to make the pass and then pull away from the field for the win.

“The track was like the old Rapid Speedway and the top was super fast and a lot of fun,” Gulbrandson said.

Schlumbohm finished second ahead of Dawson DeBoer, Blake Arends and Tracy Halouska. Schlumbohm, Gulbrandson, DeBoer and Alex Wiertzema won the heat races while Cory Kelderman won the "B" feature.

Tyler Johnson found some redemption in the Out-Pace USRA B-Mods. Johnson felt he had a win taken from him in week 1 when he made contact with a lapped car on the final lap while leading, but this time around he was not deterred. Johnson used his front row starting spot, banged his way around the cushion and led all 15 laps for his first win of 2019.

“I tried the bottom once and I didn’t like it so I went back up top,” said the driver from Montrose, South Dakota. “We should applaud the track crew for what they’ve done because this track is awesome.”

Following Johnson to the line was Keegan Nordquist, Tyler Tesch, Mitch VanEngen and Kevin Joachim who charged from 18th to finish 5th. Heat race wins went to VanEngen, Johnson and Nordquist.

The race of the night went to the Amerian Racer USRA Stock Cars as throughout the race you could throw a blanket over the top 10 cars. At any point in time there was three- and four-wide racing in the top 6 and battling for the lead. Scott Overgaard from Luverne, Minnesota, used the high line and the momentum to hold off continued challenges throughout the race from multiple drivers.

Tommy Kracht, Chad Lonneman and Roger Verdoorn all took their shots at the leader, jockeying for position and trying different lines to make the pass. Overgaard got a little breathing room after a late-race caution and picedk up his first win of the season. Krachgt came home in second followed by Colby Klaassen, Darrin Korthals (from 12th) and Rich Gregoire, who finished 5th after starting 11th.

Heat race winners were Lonneman, Justin Regnerus and Josh Kelderman.
