Elliott, Green, Galvan strike gold at I-35 Speedway

Chase Galvan won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature.

Chase Galvan won the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature.

Kansas City, Kan., native, Chase Galvan faced adversity the first three weeks of the season, finishing outside the top five. Last year's Out-Pace USRA B-Mod track champion has been frustrated, to say the least.

Prior to the feature Saturday on Missouri One Call Night, Galvin was wished good luck and he responded “We need it.”

Galvan started Inside row one, with Ben Moudry to his right. Galvan wasted no time finding the front, keeping several hungry drivers behind him. Holding on to the lead, following a few white knuckle restarts, Galvan raced his way to his first feature win at I-35 for the 2019 racing season.

In McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle, Galvan dedicated his win to prolific Kansas City driver Doug Richards who passed away earlier this year. Galvan stated that he wants to honor Richard’s memory with as many wins as he can obtain this season.

The American Racer USRA Stock Cars put on a nail-biting race, primarily between Tim Shields and Derek Green.

At the start of the event, Austin O’Neal raced into the lead, holding the spot for the early stages of the race. Shields raced by O’Neal and into the lead. Green followed suit, setting up a tight battle between the pair.

Shields held off Green, who pestered Shields lap after lap. As they raced into the final lap, heading into turn 3 Shields and Green peered out in front of them to find Thomas Ground just ahead, running at the back of the field. Racing around Ground out of the final turn heading for the checkered flag side by-side, the two drivers provided a jaw-dropping finish.

Race officials determined that Green edged out Shields for the win by mere inches.

In the final race of the evening, the USRA Modifieds rolled onto the high-banked 3/8-mile track. Last year’s track champion Dennis Elliott had yet to make it to victory lane, finishing second twice and fourth as well for the start of the 2019 season.

Elliott started outside row three. Last week’s feature victor, Lee Hibner, began his quest for back-to-back wins outside row 1. Hibner ran to the lead, with Austin Johnson, Zach Sanders, Nic Bidinger, Chad Clancy, Ed Noll and Elliott in hot pursuit.

Sanders went off the banking in turn 2, coming to a rest there and ending his chances for the win. Hibner continued up front as Elliott again somehow appeared racing through the traffic jam and into second behind Hibner.

Holding off Elliott running the cushion, Hibner appeared to be the winner. During post race inspection, however, race officials disqualified Hibner and Elliott was credited with his first feature win of the year.

Next Saturday at the I-35 Speedway, it’s Metcalf Carstar Night. The track will be honoring the late and former I-35 Speedway champion, Cletus “Mudcat” Murray.
