Exciting finish ends in seventh win for Gulbrandson

As it turned out, the gross of cautions and a red flag in the Cook Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stock feature were worth waiting through.

The 15-lap feature, which eventually got cut to a green-white-checkered finish, saw four lead changes, a car on its roof and a finish that many racers only picture in their dreams.

Nick Brady led the first lap. He was passed by Justin Luinenburg on the second lap. Brady regained the lead when Luinenburg pitted for a flat tire after four laps. More cautions prevented the feature from getting laps in. However, with the time limit approaching, Brady, Dustin Gulbrandson and Malik Sampson engaged in an epic battle for the lead until Brady made contact with the wall coming out of turn two. His car climbed the wall and rolled onto its roof. Brady was okay, but unable to continue.

The green-white-checkered finish had Sampson restarting at the front of the field. Gulbrandson got up on his bumper and, just when it looked like Sampson would be able to earn his second win, the division’s points leader went to the outside as the drivers came through the final corner. Gulbrandson amazingly shot past Sampson’s outside and beat him to the checkered flag by just two one-hundredths of a second for his seventh win of the season.

Dan Strandberg, Keeran Sampson and Tyler Schlumbohm were third, fourth and fifth. Tyler Pospisil was the event’s hard charger coming from 20th to seventh.

Problems befell Dave Kennedy when his car failed at the start of the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature. The ensuing DNF took him out of contention for the track title. The accordion effect on the rest of the field didn’t take out any other cars.

Two laps after the restart, Justin Luinenburg swept past Andrew Ahlers to take control of the race. Ahlers was left to battle with Justin Voeltz for second as Luinenburg pulled away—a battle won by Ahlers. Chris Goetz wrested some on-track and mechanical demons to come in fourth while Dan Ross took fifth. Luinenburg’s fifth win put him 120 points ahead of Dave Kennedy.

Austin Friedrich was a first-time winner in the USRA Tuners, finishing ahead of Kent Miller and Scott Espey.

Nobles County Speedway would like to thank all of the racing teams as well as First State Bank Southwest and Perkins Restaurant for their help in making Kid’s Night a success.
