Austin O’Neal celebrates after winning his first Holley USRA Stock Car feature on Friday, Aug. 24, at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.

Eighty-five cars and drivers signed in for a late-August night of racing on the river’s edge at the Lakeside Speedway on Friday.

Holley USRA Stock Cars were up first with a pair of heat races. In a thrilling finish, Sam Scott led the field from the onset but Tim Shields drove from row three and nearly pulled off a last-lap pass for the win, but Scott prevailed at the checkered flag. For heat two, fourth-starting Austin O’Neal dominated for the victory with Nick Whalen finishing second.

Andy Bryant claimed the first Out-Pace URA B-Mod heat race over Tim Powell by a mere two-one hundredths of a second. In heat two, Chase Galvan advanced from row three to assume command of the race and never relinquished the lead as he captured the win.

USRA Modified action completed the night’s heat races with a dominating performance by Mark Schafman to secure the win over Justin Johnson. Kerry Davis drove away from the rest of the field for the victory in heat race #2 with Lance Town moving up for a second-place finish.

In the Holley USRA Stock Car feature, O’Neal showed the way at the drop of the green with Scott to the outside. O’Neal quickly shot out to the lead as Scott and Shields ran hard for the second spot. Scott eventually contacted the utility tire in turn four and fell from contention leaving Shields in second. O’Neal hit his marks lap after lap and went unchallenged en route to his first feature win of the season with Shields running a solid second followed by a fantastic run to third by Russ Moyer.

In the 15-lap Out-Pace USRA B-Mod main, polesitter Powell was in search of his ninth win on the year as he and Galvan paced the field. The pair raced close through the opening laps swapping the lead. In a furious battle to the win, the lead duo hit lapped traffic by lap 9. Coming to the line at lap 10, Galvan was the leader as the pair made slight contact entering turn 1 but Galvan maintained his lead and never looked back to claim his first win of the season with Powell finishing second in front of last week’s winner, Patrick Royalty, in third.

USRA Modifieds capped the night with their 20-lap main event with Tim Karrick and Schafman on row 1. At the start of the race it was a tough go as Karrick and Schafman were caught up in a turn 3 incident to draw an early yellow. Soon after, Justin Johnson inherited the lead for the restart, but his car lost power as soon as racing continued, and he was forced to retire. By then, Darron Fuqua found himself in the lead with Kerry Davis and Tad Davis also near the front. After a few mid-race cautions, Fuqua showed why he is the USRA national points leader as he pulled away from the field for his sixth victory of the year at Lakeside Speedway and 15th overall in USRA competition. Kerry Davis was strong in second with Nic Bidinger advancing to third at the finish.

Up Next: Lakeside Speedway wishes to remind drivers and fans the speedway is closed for Labor Day Weekend and will not be running on Friday, Aug. 31. Racing resumes on Friday, Sept. 7, for Championship Night in all divisions.
