Sampson tops 32-car Hobby stock field at NCS

Justin Luinenburg’s misfortune resulted in Devon Schlumbohm’s first Out-Pace USRA B-Mod win. Schlumbohm wrestled with Luinenburg over several laps and a couple of restarts before Luinenburg finally cleared the pole-sitter. Luinenburg marched from fifth to what looked like a sure win until he suffered mechanical problems in the fourth turn of the final lap, handing the win to the Sioux Falls high-sider. Luinenburg dropped to 13th while Dave Kennedy and Miah Christensen got by for second and third. Schlumbohm had just missed out on wins each of the last two weeks with second and fourth place finishes. His win, however, puts him one point ahead of Christensen atop the point standings.

With the Jerry “Mahoney” Gronewald Memorial Race just a week ahead, 32 Cooks Racing Supplies USRA Hobby Stocks checked in. Malik Sampson cruised to the win after shaking off early challenges from Keeran Sampson, Austin Jahnz, Corey Gronewald and Justin Luinenburg. Sampson’s win was his first of the season. He had pole for the start. Luinenburg finished second. Tom Kracht managed third after starting 12th.

Mechanical problems befell Holley USRA Stock Car points leader Luke Sathoff as he was leading the A-Main. Kevin Debaere had raced from fourth to second when Sathoff’s caution occurred. Debaere then held off Jon DeBoer for the win. It was also Debaere’s first race this season at NCS. Dylan Fitzpatrick was able to chip into Sathoff’s points lead after a fourth place finish. Sathoff’s lead over Fitzpatrick is just eight points.

Nate Coopman also scored his second consecutive win in the Afterhour Graphics, Tees and More USRA Tuner division. Scott Espey made it close coming from fourth.

It’s a big week at Nobles County Speedway. First, the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) returns to the quarter-mile track on Thursday, June 28. Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, New Mexico leads Jake O’Neil of Tucson, Arizona by just 31 points in the Hunt for the Casey’s Cup coming into the night. USRA Stock Cars, B-Modifieds and Hobby Stocks will also race. Hot laps begin at 7:00 p.m.

Then, Saturday, June 30 is the much anticipated Jerry “Mahoney” Gronewald Hobby Stock Memorial paying $1058 to win. Nobles County Speedway is averaging over 30 Hobby Stocks per night through the first four weeks of the season. The event, which also pays $100 to start, will see a great field of cars as drivers and fans remember “Mahoney,” driver of the #58. The National Guard is coming to the track with loads of giveaways. 1000 decals and 500 free Memorial bracelets will be available in addition to t-shirt and bike giveaways. Special pace cars and a balloon release will also start the event. For more information on the USMTS special, the Mahoney Memorial or any other event log onto www.noblescountyspeedway.com or see the NCS Facebook page.
