Keeter, Gillmore fend off fierce fields at Springfield

Webb City's Mitch Keeter jumped from his outside pole spot and withstood a late caution to grab his second USRA Modified feature win of the season at the Springfield Raceway Sunday on Reliable Chevrolet Night.

The program was moved to Sunday evening after severe threats of storms were forecast for Saturday. Track owner/promoter Jerry Hoffman moved the Sunday evening start time to 6:30 as cooler temps greeted the crowd and the program kept the fans leaving wanting more as two- and three-wide racing was the call with over 100 cars in the pits.

Polesitter Mickey Burrell and Keeter brought the 21-car field to the green as Keeter wasted no time in jumping to the top spot on the high side quickly as track points leader Jody Tillman and Jim Body were waging an outstanding battle as all eyes were on surprise visitor, Terry Phillips, as he and defending Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national champion Ryan Gilmore were going back and forth.

With keeter holding strong, Phillips and Gilmore moved through the pack and treated the crowd to several position swaps. A lap-14 caution slowed the quick pace as Gilmore picked the top lane on the double-file restart as the veteran Phillips made a bold move down low to take second place with Gilmore riding the high side.

A final caution on lap 16 saw Gilmore pass Phillips on the restart as Keeter pulled away. The real battle for runner-up honors saw the duo go back and forth before Phillips nipped Gilmore for the spot while Tillman held back a surge from Mike Striegel in completing the top five.

The Out-Pace USRA B-Mods were competing for $700 to win with 29 entries getting down to a field of 20 for the main event. With the top eight redrawing, high-point driver Chad Staus pulled a three with the front row being occupied by Gillmore and anothr former Out-Pace USRA B-Mod national champ, J.C. Morton. Meanwhile, current national points leader Kris Jackson pulled No. 7 as the field was set.

Heat race winners were Gilmore, Clint Johnson, Morton and Jackson as current track points leader Jackie Dalton had to win the "B" feature to advance.

Gilmore jumped to his high side hustle with Morton following closely as the two drivers on the move were Jackson and young Taylor Moore, who started 17th, and Dalton. A late caution bunched the already tight pack even closer as Jackson was using a diamond move to run down Gilmore with Morton keeping pressure on up high while Justn Comer found the groove strong late in the race to close on the top three.

As Jackson kept speed on the bottom in the corners, Gilmore used the top lane to keep speed up as he nipped Jackson by about two car lengths to win with Morton, Comer and Moore completed the top five.

Nineteen of the 20 starters finished on the lead lap as only two cautions slowed the pace before the leaders got into lapped traffic.

Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action continues next Saturday, June 9, with USRA Modifieds and Out-Pace USRA B-Mods in action with racing to start at 7 p.m.
