Wheeler, Cole take Sunday wins at Tri-State Speedway

Memorial Day Weekend racing at the mighty Tri-State Speedway saw Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points racing and added money for all classes on Sunday night. Mid 90-degree temperatures greeted the fans. What has become the norm under new track owners, the track was ready to race at the advertised hot lap time and produced a four-wide and fast track for the drivers and fans.

The pre-race ceremonies started just before 8 p.m. Respect was paid to our fallen veterans after the invocation with Amazing Grace, a 21-Gun Salute and Taps being played over the PA system. Gabrielle Gore followed with a live singing of our National Anthem.

Heat races were determined by the driver’s draw at sign in. Out-Pace USRA B-Mod drivers drew for their invert, but the feature lineups for the USRA Modifieds were determined by a pole dash in each class that was held first after intermission. Several drivers did well and advanced their starting positions by defeating their competitors who qualified better than them from their heats. Bonus money was also paid to drivers for each round they won.

At intermission, a $100 gift card from Philpot’s Car Care Center was given to the oldest female service member in attendance to honor Memorial Day. Everyone had a chance to grab themselves some food items from the newly reconfigured concession along with an ice-cold Pepsi product. They also grabbed TSS T-shirts and Tornado Relief Concert shirts from the T-shirt booth.

The second race on the track after intermission was the Out-Pace USRA B-Mod feature where Tate Cole of Fort Gibson crossed the finish line first ahead of Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., and Brandon Wilson of Fort Smith, Ark. Along with the trophy, Cole picked up $1,000 for the win.

The USRA Modifieds took to the high banks last for feature. Chad Wheeler of Muskogee crossed the finish line first as Brent Holman of Rogers, Ark., took home second place over Holzkamper. Along with the win, Wheeler left with a hefty $1,500 paycheck for the win.

The next event for Tri-State Speedway will be on June 2 as the ASCS Sprint Cars return to the famous high banks with point racing in all regular classes, too. Topless Out-Pace USRA B-Mod action is coming soon, too. More information on all events can be found at www.tri-statespeedway.com and our social media channels.
